Creative Education at Crosthwaite Primary School with Canva and Thinglink
• Students use Canva and Thinglink to conduct a virtual field trip project to the Lake District • Students explore a variety of topics including local tourism, food, and wildlife through interviews, field visits, and research • Strengthen collaboration, communication, and digital capabilities through the creation of a digital portfolio • Improve your content creation and presentation skills by ethically using AI tools Innovative approach to education Crosthwaite Elementary School has been implementing innovative education that actively utilizes digital technology under the leadership of Principal Matt for 13 years. In particular, Mr. Pete is leading digital education, and all grades from 1st to 6th grade are creating digital portfolios. Project-based learning in practice Students were divided into teams based on their interests in the Lake District area. Each team chose a topic ranging from local tourism, Michelin restaurants, the endangered bird Kewpie, to climate. It started with internet research, but gradually evolved into interviews and visits with experts in the field. Integrated use of digital tools We used Canva and Thinglink as our main tools to create virtual field trip content. We learned and utilized various functions such as image creation using AI functions, whiteboard collaboration, and video production. In particular, students voluntarily collaborated through Google Meet and carried out the project even on weekends. Challenges to the future of education Principal Matt emphasizes that the current education system must change to fit the digital age. He says that teaching AI ethically is as important as English and math. He believes that growing into a confident and independent learner is more important than test scores. Direction of sustainable development Crosthwaite Primary School shares students’ projects through LinkedIn and plans to expand collaboration with schools in other countries. They are pursuing continuous innovation, such as introducing micro-credentials to their digital portfolio. This successful example of digital education in primary schools shows that it can be applied to secondary education as well.
