At the center of this is AI (Artificial Intelligence). The recent “World Snorkel Day” event explored the many uses of Snorkel, an AI-based educational platform. The event provided educators with insightful ideas on how to effectively integrate AI into the classroom. Snorkel: Visualization of student thinking and immediate feedback Snorkel is an innovative tool that captures students’ thinking processes and provides immediate feedback. At the heart of the platform is a multi-modal input system that allows students to express their thinking in a variety of forms, including text, images, and voice. This goes beyond traditional assessment methods and promotes students’ deep understanding and creative expression. In the first session of the event, Kate and Nicole discussed the combination of Edgy Protocols and Snorkel. Edgy Protocols is a lesson framework for learning that can be combined with Snorkel to make students' thinking more visible. They introduced protocols such as Cyber Sandwich and Lateral Reading, emphasizing that these can enhance students' critical thinking and text analysis skills. Snorkel Utilization in Various Subjects ELA(English Language Arts) Amanda Fox introduced the SAIL approach to using Snorkel in ELA classes. This method involves selecting, adjusting, innovating, and leveraging existing lessons. This allows for a variety of language arts activities to be integrated into Snorkel, such as analyzing poetry, understanding metaphors, and understanding authorial intent. Math Emily Castano presented a way to utilize Snorkel in her mathematics classroom. The key is to overcome the limitations of the traditional classroom method and provide opportunities to hear the thoughts of all students. She emphasized that it can be combined with the station rotation model in a blended learning environment to provide individualized feedback. She also suggested that Snorkel can be combined with the "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics" approach to develop students' mathematical thinking more deeply. Science Farmer Fobs introduced the use of Snorkel in science classes. He emphasized that Snorkel is effective in increasing student participation and motivation, promoting deep understanding, and developing critical thinking skills. He said that Snorkel is particularly useful in activities such as explaining the state of matter or creating and explaining scientific diagrams. He also explained that the Snorkel Coach function enables interactive learning with AI, providing a richer learning experience. World Languages Bla presented a variety of ways to use Snorkel in world language learning. It can support language learning at various levels, from beginner to advanced, and especially emphasizes the cultural context and pronunciation and fluency practice. He explained that students can systematically improve their language skills by using different approaches at different levels. Social Studies Chrisy Cloud introduced ways to use Snorkel in social studies. He explained how to modify and reuse existing activities in the Snorkel library, and how to create new activities. He emphasized that Snorkel can be used effectively in activities such as analyzing historical events, learning geography, and understanding types of government. He also provided useful tips on setting up AI feedback. Innovative Use Cases The 'Innovation Slam' session featured a variety of educators sharing their creative uses of Snorkel. Kim shared her idea of combining Edgy Protocols with Snorkel, Andrew Davies shared his idea of using Snorkel in elementary schools, Eric Curts shared his idea of using Snorkel to assess reading fluency, Lisa Black described her experience with Snorkel from a student perspective, and Stephen suggested using Snorkel as a self-reflection and behavior monitoring tool. Snorkel Introduction and Lighthouse Leaders Program The final part of the event covered how individual teachers can create and use Snorkel accounts, and introduced the 'Lighthouse Leaders' pilot program to introduce Snorkel at the school or district level. The program provides teacher training and support resources, and ongoing collaboration with the Snorkel team to support effective use of the platform. In particular, the Snorkel team has demonstrated a strong commitment to security and privacy. They emphasized that the platform is COPPA and FERPA compliant and is iKeepSafe certified, which gives educational institutions the confidence to deploy Snorkel.
