Results of a survey on the use and perception of generative AI among youth and young adults
More than half have used it, but daily use is limited... Especially, black and Latino youth have a high rate of weekly use
Information acquisition, creative activities, etc... Concerns include bias, job loss, and invasion of privacy
Positive and negative influences are expected to coexist in the future... Teenagers "I want adults to take interest in AI"
According to a survey conducted by Common Sense Media, Hopelab, and Harvard University’s Center for Digital Thriving, 51% of American youth aged 14-22 have used generative AI such as ChatGPT. However, only 4% of them said they use it almost every day, indicating that it is not yet at the level of daily use. 8% of the total said they have never heard of generative AI.
By race, Black and Latino youth were twice as likely to use weekly generative AI as white youth (16% and 14% vs. 7%). By gender, men had more experience using it than women (53% vs. 48%).
The most common purposes for using generative AI were to acquire information (53%) and generate ideas (51%), followed by academics (46%), image creation (31%), music production (16%), work (16%), and coding (15%). Black and Latino youth used generative AI more for most activities than white youth.
Meanwhile, the reasons given for not using generative AI included “I don’t think it will be helpful” (34%), “It is associated with cheating or plagiarism” (24%), “I don’t know how to use it” (23%), and “I am concerned about invasion of privacy or information leakage” (22%). LGBTQ+ youth cited inaccuracy or bias in information (34% vs. 14%) and lack of fun (36% vs. 9%) more often than straight/cisgender youth.
When asked about the impact generative AI will have on their lives in the next 10 years, 41% predicted a mix of positive and negative effects. 19% expected a mostly negative impact, and 16% expected a mostly positive impact. LGBTQ+ youth were more likely to expect a negative impact than straight/cisgender youth (28% vs. 17%).
Positive expectations include improved accessibility to information, which will make studying and working easier, and increased creativity. Concerns include job losses, AI domination of humans, intellectual property rights infringement, spread of misinformation, and invasion of privacy.
In another survey, teens aged 13-17 told adults that “the world is changing,” “we are the future,” and “AI is the future.” Some expressed concerns, saying, “AI is creepy,” but others said positively, “I’m looking forward to seeing how AI develops.”
The teenagers wanted adults to take an interest in AI and learn how to use it to guide them. While they used AI as a learning aid, they were wary of doing their homework instead. They confessed that they ask AI questions that adults find difficult to answer, and sometimes share comfort and communication. They also admitted that AI is used as a means of bullying or lying to parents.
This survey suggests that generative AI will have a significant impact on education and industry. In particular, it seems urgent to establish policies and programs for the healthy use of AI and mental health of underprivileged youth. At the same time, it seems necessary to have a social discussion that spans generations to proactively respond to potential risks brought about by AI and maximize its advantages.
