Transforming Tanzania Education: Mastercard Foundation’s EdTech Project

A breath of fresh air is blowing in Tanzania’s education sector. The project is led by an edutech project supported by the Mastercard Foundation. The project aims to expand learning opportunities and close the learning gap for rural Tanzanian students.
Innovative EdTech Startup
The project selected 10 startups in the education sector. One of them, Shulesoft, provides a platform that allows students from elementary to secondary school to access a variety of subjects. The platform is useful in many ways, such as managing student attendance, analyzing academic performance, supporting school operations, and managing tuition payments.
Background and goals of the project
The project is a partnership between Sahara Consult and the Mastercard Foundation. “This program is designed to support promising edtech ventures in Africa, and over the next eight months, Tanzanian edtech companies will be prepared for growth, sustainability, and impact through business and financial support, as well as insights into the science of learning,” said Nancy Kiondo, CEO of Sahara Consult.
A five-year journey
The project will be implemented across Tanzania over the next five years and will address all aspects of education to achieve its goals.
Participating startups
In addition to Shulesoft, several other startups are participating in this project, including Shuleyetu Innovations Limited, Mtabe, Smartdarasa, Infotaaluma, Smartcore Enterprise Limited, Kilimanjaro Planetarium (Rada 360 Ltd.), MITz Group Company Limited, Fiqra Technologies, and Taifa Technovation Hub.
Cooperation with the government
“The government’s enabling environment has made this project a success,” said Dr. Amos Nungu, from the Science and Technology Commission, adding that he hopes other stakeholders will work with young people to help bring their ideas to market.
