Three ways ChatGPT supports innovative educators

OpenAI announced that all GPTs in the GPT Store are available for free.
This news is a huge help to educators who can now use custom AI tools without financial barriers. I reached out to educators around the world via LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook to find out how they are benefiting from GPT.
What is GPT?
GPT allows users with a paid ChatGPT account to create custom AI chatbots for specific tasks.
Many educators are using GPT to develop unique tools to address a variety of challenges. According to an email from OpenAI, “All ChatGPT free users can now use GPT in the GPT Store, making AI technology accessible to everyone.”
Although users can now access GPT for free, the ability to create GPT is still available only to paid accounts.
Strengthening teachers' capacity
GPT offers educators an unprecedented opportunity. Traditionally, teachers have relied on educational technology companies to understand their needs and create effective tools. Now, with GPT, they can create solutions tailored to their specific needs, automate tasks, and provide specialized support to themselves and their colleagues.
Antti Leppilampi, a senior lecturer at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, uses GPT to enhance his coaching sessions. “I integrate GPT during the sessions and give students prompt ideas to continue the conversation with GPT later,” he explains. “Now that GPT is freely available, I am likely to integrate it into other classes as well.”
This accessibility gives educators the freedom to experiment and integrate GPT widely.
Three Good Reasons for Educators
1.
Increase efficiency and productivity
GPT automates time-consuming tasks, allowing educators to focus more on teaching.
“I use it every day to analyze test results and create personalized review materials,” said Andrew Spiece, a computer science teacher at Grand Blanc High School in Michigan. “It’s a total game changer.”
“I created a GPT that walks students through a specific problem-solving process when they upload a worksheet,” shared Sue Cluck, a science teacher at Gravette High School in Arkansas. “Another one is to help break down a standard and output specific statements based on that standard.”
2.
Personalized learning experience
GPT allows you to personalize the tool to fit the needs of individual students.
“I have developed a number of GPTs to enhance teaching and learning, and have been experimenting with AI since its introduction in 2022,” says Jess Baron, an inclusive education teacher in Ottawa, Canada. “I have developed a number of GPTs, including curriculum guides, virtual word walls to create more efficient, accessible products, custom feedback scripts, gamification of learning, and SMART goal navigators.”
3.
Fast and reliable access to information
GPT can save you time and reduce confusion by providing fast, accurate information.
“I have shared GPT with my students for the Internal Assessment and Extended Essays,” explains Jack Dougall, a humanities teacher at Canterbury School in the Canary Islands. “It gives clear answers with page numbers.”
“We created GPT to analyze students’ block-based programs and provide feedback and debugging support,” said Michael Fricano II, a K-6 design technology teacher at Hawaii’s Iolani Schools. “And since it’s free, it makes it even more accessible to schools!”
Expanding the possibilities for educators
The impact of free GPT extends beyond immediate classroom work.
Louise Jones, community manager at ThingLink in Scotland, highlights the broad accessibility for isolated educators. “We developed a GPT tool to help with the construction of digital escape rooms. It’s been very popular because it makes immersive learning experiences much easier thanks to AI,” she explains.

Education Innovation
Free access to GPT represents a turning point where teachers are becoming creators rather than just users of AI. Now, more educators can leverage the power of AI to transform their work, streamline their workflows, and provide personalized support to their students and colleagues. Although the ability to create GPT still requires a paid account, the ability to use existing GPT for free enhances teaching and learning experiences and creates a more inclusive and effective learning environment.
Before introducing GPT into your classroom, follow your organization’s data protection procedures. Always seek guidance from the responsible authorities of your school, college or university. Complying with data protection regulations is important to protect the information of students and teachers.
The integration of GPT promises a future where teachers’ expertise and experience directly impact the technologies they use.
