Introduction
Over the past year, interest in and use of artificial intelligence (AI)[1] has exploded. In particular, advances in generative AI[2] are having a major impact on education. The National Literacy Trust has conducted a large-scale survey to determine the impact of these changes on literacy.
Research Methods
In 2023 and early 2024, we conducted an annual literacy survey of tens of thousands of children and young people and more than a thousand teachers in primary and secondary schools across England. The survey included questions about the use of generative AI.
Key Research Findings
Students’ Use of AI
By 2024, 77% of youth ages 13-18 said they have used generative AI.
Primary Uses: Entertainment, Curiosity, Homework, Inspiration
44% for conversation, 19% for story writing, 13% for poetry and lyrics, and 9% for nonfiction writing.
40% said AI helps with writing, 23% said it helps with reading
Teachers’ Use of AI
By 2024, 48% of teachers will use generative AI tools (57% of secondary teachers, 31% of elementary teachers)
38% create lesson content, 35% create model answers, 32% use it for lesson planning
Pros and Cons of Using AI
Merit
Can be used as a new tool to improve literacy
Opportunities for students to develop AI literacy skills
Disadvantage
Concerns about students’ lack of critical literacy skills
Possible decline in overall writing ability
Uncertainty about how teachers can use AI effectively
Conclusion
Generative AI is bringing about a major change in the field of education. It is important to find appropriate responses and ways to utilize it. Developing the ability of both teachers and students to effectively use AI and critically evaluate it will be key to future education.
