Paradigm shift in English education brought about by AI technology

As Garrett Karrian, a British English education expert, highlighted in a recent webinar, advances in AI technology are providing tremendous opportunities in English education. In particular, AI-based chatbots such as ChatGPT are providing groundbreaking assistance to teachers in creating lesson materials and activities. When teachers input specific and clear prompts for lesson plans, quizzes, grammar explanations, vocabulary activities, etc., ChatGPT generates creative and useful materials in an instant. Students can also directly interact with ChatGPT to receive grammar correction feedback and practice discussions based on their interests. This is a representative example of enabling learner-centered, personalized learning.
When combined with platforms like Wordwall, lesson materials created with ChatGPT can be easily transformed into more interactive and dynamic online learning activities. In addition, tools like TW-E and Diff-it automatically generate listening and vocabulary questions using real language materials like YouTube videos, and provide amazing functions that reorganize materials to suit the learner's level. This can be evaluated as an innovative technology that can drastically reduce the time and effort teachers spend on class preparation, while increasing the effectiveness of learning.
In particular, I think the advancement of AI voice recognition and synthesis technology has the potential to change the future of English education the most. For example, tools like Play.ht can replicate the learner's voice and create a virtual AI tutor that speaks in their actual voice. It may not be perfect now, but considering the speed of technological development, it is clear that it will reach an amazing level in the near future. It is no exaggeration to say that the era in which we practice real communication with an AI tutor that speaks in our own voice is not far away.
Advances in AI tools for learners are also noteworthy. Mizou provides learners with realistic speaking practice opportunities through role-plays with chatbots designed by teachers to meet specific learning objectives. For example, it sets up a situation where a teacher orders drinks and cakes at a cafe, and naturally guides learners to learn related vocabulary and expressions through conversations with the chatbot. The learner’s conversations are automatically analyzed, providing immediate feedback on pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary usage. Tools such as Pronounce also use speech recognition technology to precisely analyze and correct learners’ pronunciation, helping learners acquire pronunciation that is close to native speakers.
If AI technology is appropriately utilized in classes like this, teachers will be able to focus on more creative and essential educational activities, rather than simply repetitive class preparation processes. From the learner’s perspective, AI will be more than just a fun learning tool; it will be a strong companion and helper that provides personalized learning that matches their level and interests. AI technology is also expected to play a key role in creating an environment where true communication-centered language education takes place.
Of course, incorporating AI technology into education is a task that cannot be accomplished overnight. There are many hurdles to overcome, such as fostering AI literacy in teachers, establishing infrastructure at the school level, and teaching learners how to properly use AI. However, English education is at a critical crossroads that requires change and innovation more than ever. If our English educators actively explore the infinite potential of AI technology and wisely accept it, I am confident that we will be able to make a significant leap forward in the quality and substance of education. Let us all take on a new challenge together with AI, which will be the bright wings of future English education.
