Hello, everyone! Today I have some really exciting news for you. Google is introducing AI to the education field. What does this mean? Let’s find out together.
Gemini, you're going to school now!
Google's AI assistant Gemini is now entering the classroom. Last year, Google released a personal version of Gemini that was secure for teens, but now it's going a step further and making it available for school accounts, too.
Gemini will be available to students in more than 100 countries for free in the coming months, with a Google Workspace for Education account and a school-issued Chromebook. There are age restrictions, of course: 13 and up in the US, and 18 and up in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, Canada, and the UK.
What can you do with Gemini?
Students can interact with Gemini as if they were on their own personal account. They can use features like ‘writing assistant’, ‘reading assistant’, AI background generation, and AI-based noise removal. They can also organize and track their homework with Google Tasks and Calendar, and collaborate with friends using Meet and Assignments.
There are also features for teachers. Google Classroom will be integrated with your school’s Student Information System (SIS), making it easier to set up classes, manage student lists, and set grades.
Safety and accessibility in mind
Google hasn’t forgotten about security and privacy either. School administrators can prevent bullying by blocking students from sending direct messages or limiting the creation of spaces. They can also require approval from at least two school officials before implementing security-sensitive changes.
Accessibility features have also been added. Chromebooks will get a “read aloud” feature for the Chrome browser, and text from PDFs can be extracted for screen readers to read. Later this year, there will even be a feature that lets you control your Chromebook using just your facial expressions and head movements!
In conclusion
Google's efforts will likely help bring AI into the classroom safely and responsibly. But as we all know, today's teenagers are quick to find ways to bypass school web filters. Whether Google's good intentions are enough, or whether unexpected problems will arise... we'll all have to wait and see.
