Introducing the Power of Media Storytelling with KQED
In this session, we will introduce the KQED team, including Jaren, Tosh, Angel, and Rachel, and their roles in education and media storytelling. KQED is a public media station in the San Francisco Bay Area that focuses on amplifying the voices of diverse youth and providing free media literacy resources for educators around the world. In this session, we will discuss the Youth Media Challenge and KQED Teach as valuable resources for teachers in particular.
Empowering youth voices through media projects
The Youth Media Challenge provides students in grades 6-12 with the opportunity to produce a media project in which they can choose a writing genre and media format. The initiative aims to amplify the voices of diverse young people from diverse backgrounds and regions, encourage empathy and creative expression, and strengthen traditional literacy and media literacy. The project engages students with ownership in sharing their perspectives through media storytelling, in line with best pedagogical practices.
Implementing Media Projects in the Classroom
The Youth Media Challenge project has a linked curriculum that can be integrated into a variety of subject areas. You can transform traditional writing-based activities such as personal stories, essays, and poetry into media projects. You can integrate media that is actually used around the world into your lessons, such as audio exhibition guides in history classes or data visualizations in science classes.
The production cycle for implementing a media project includes media analysis, creating pre-production examples, and brainstorming. Teachers are encouraged to model the media they want students to produce and engage students in analyzing and reflecting on existing student-produced media. Padlet can be used as a tool to explore and discuss a variety of media examples.
Use the Padlet feature to participate in class
Students can use color filters to highlight specific posts, giving them a variety of ways to present and view Padlets. Easily convert Padlets to slideshows to showcase images, videos, surveys, and PDFs, giving your class a dynamic way to present. Powerful features of this platform include options to hide or show post authors and timestamps, as well as a variety of moderation settings to encourage more engaging and supportive conversations in class.
Using Padlet for Media Analysis in the Classroom
Teachers can use Padlet to create a platform where students can view and comment on media examples. This helps students understand production choices and prepare for their own projects. Padlet can also be used to collect feedback during the pre-production and post-production stages of media production.
Using Padlet for student feedback and collaboration
Padlet streamlines the feedback process by providing an automatic remake link for easy distribution of templates to students. Customizing post fields and attachments allows you to provide a more focused and personalized experience for students. The platform facilitates the exchange of feedback and allows students to learn from each other’s input, improving their media production skills.
The Importance of Feedback and Publishing in Media Education
Feedback is an important part of the media production process, helping students develop the skills and confidence to give and receive feedback.
Posting student work through platforms like Youth Media Showcase or Padlet can help reach a wider audience and help students build their digital presence.
Padlet offers the flexibility to share and showcase student projects with your school, family, or larger community, and also provides the option to pin work for presentations.
The Power of Digital Media to Share Student Voices
Digital media can be used to share student work widely, including parent newsletters and local government officials. KY Teach offers free courses for teachers on media production, including podcasts, videos, and photo essays. Padlet is free to use, with the option to purchase a subscription for unlimited use, providing a safe environment for teachers and students.
