Quizizz is an educational platform that started about a decade ago, initially as a tool for teachers to create quizzes and assessments for their students. Quizizz co-founder Deepak Joy Cheenath likens the platform to YouTube. Just as YouTube is a user-generated content platform, Quizizz is an open platform where teachers can freely create and share content. Coursera, on the other hand, is compared to a curated content platform like Netflix.
The Role of Educational Technology
Quizizz’s primary goal is not to replace teachers, but to make classes more effective. The platform helps teachers better understand and respond to the needs of individual students, even when teaching up to 40 students at the same time. For example, Quizizz allows teachers to check students’ understanding in real time and see who needs more help. The platform also helps students stay motivated by making learning a more fun and engaging experience.
Adoption of educational technology in India
Adoption of education technology in India is still in its early stages. Infrastructure issues and cultural barriers are the main challenges. Many schools have unreliable internet connections, and even expensive private schools often lack reliable Wi-Fi. But things are changing since the pandemic. While only a few teachers were experimenting with technology before, more teachers are now embracing it in their teaching. Deepak says India is still conservative in adopting technology compared to countries like Indonesia, but it is gradually becoming more open.

AI is playing an increasingly important role in education. Quizizz is leveraging various AI models to improve its services. For example, AI can help generate quizzes or lesson materials. However, Deepak points out that AI’s current capabilities also have limitations. In particular, when it comes to localization and customization, AI cannot yet completely replace the expertise of teachers. For example, AI-generated content often does not fit the curriculum of a particular country or region, and teachers still need to be involved to adjust it.
Differences in education systems across countries
Deepak provides interesting insights into the differences between the Indian and American education systems. He points out that it is unfair to compare private schools in India with the average public school in the United States, since private schools in India represent only a small percentage of the overall student population in India. However, when comparing schools of similar quality, the main difference is in the teaching methods. Indian classrooms are more disciplined and teacher-centered, while American classrooms are more interactive and student-participatory. These differences affect the development of students’ confidence and communication skills.
Quizizz's technology stack and AI model
Quizizz uses AWS as its primary infrastructure, and its core technology stack is based on Node.js. It utilizes multiple programming languages and databases depending on its various functions. For AI models, Quizizz is experimenting with several models, but ChatGPT currently shows the most reliable performance. In addition, it is using models from Anthropic, Google’s API, etc. for specific purposes.
Quizizz's vision and future plans
Quizizz’s vision is to be a comprehensive learning platform. Deepak describes Quizizz as an “operating system for learning.” It aims to enable teachers to manage all their educational activities in one place, keep data consistent, and easily share content. However, Quizizz does not plan to include features that are not directly related to learning, such as attendance checks, bus tracking, and fee management.
On the investment side, Quizizz has raised funding from a number of notable investors, including Tiger Global, Horizons, Nexus Venture Partners, Prime Ventures, and Eight Roads, which is a testament to Quizizz’s growth potential and its importance in the education technology market.
In conclusion, Quizizz is a great example of the future of educational technology. It uses technology to complement and enhance teachers rather than replace them, and it takes full advantage of AI’s strengths while recognizing its limitations.
