Introducing the Power of Media Storytelling with KQED
In this session, we will introduce the KQED team, including Jaren, Tosh, Angel, and Rachel, and their roles in education and media storytelling. KQED is a public media station in the San Francisco Bay Area that focuses on amplifying the voices of diverse youth and providing free media literacy resources for educators around the world. In this session, we will discuss the Youth Media Challenge and KQED Teach as valuable resources for teachers in particular.
Empowering youth voices through media projects
The Youth Media Challenge provides students in grades 6-12 with the opportunity to produce a media project in which they can choose a writing genre and media format. The initiative aims to amplify the voices of diverse young people from diverse backgrounds and regions, encourage empathy and creative expression, and strengthen traditional literacy and media literacy. The project engages students with ownership in sharing their perspectives through media storytelling, in line with best pedagogical practices.
Implementing Media Projects in the Classroom
The Youth Media Challenge project has a linked curriculum that can be integrated into a variety of subject areas. You can transform traditional writing-based activities such as personal stories, essays, and poetry into media projects. You can integrate media that is actually used around the world into your lessons, such as audio exhibition guides in history classes or data visualizations in science classes.
