Outline

Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2 is a hybrid Mamba-Transformer language model designed to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy compared to similarly sized models while increasing inference throughput. Based on the Nemotron-H architecture, it replaces most of the self-attention layers of typical Transformer architectures with Mamba-2 layers, improving inference speed while generating the long thought processes required for inference. First, a 12 billion-parameter model (Nemotron-Nano-12B-v2-Base) is pretrained with an FP8 training recipe using 20 trillion tokens, and then the model is compressed and distilled using the Minitron strategy, enabling inference on up to 128k tokens on a single NVIDIA A10G GPU (22GiB memory, bfloat16 precision). Compared to existing models of similar size (e.g., Qwen3-8B), Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2 achieves equivalent or better accuracy on inference benchmarks while achieving up to 6x higher inference throughput at inference settings such as 8k input and 16k output tokens. We release checkpoints for Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2, Nemotron-Nano-12B-v2-Base, and Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2-Base, as well as most of the pre- and post-training datasets, to Hugging Face.

Takeaways, Limitations

Takeaways:
The Mamba-Transformer architecture improves the throughput of inference tasks by up to 6x compared to existing models.
Achieved equivalent or better accuracy compared to models of similar size.
Enables long text processing of up to 128k tokens on a single NVIDIA A10G GPU.
We've made the model and dataset public on Hugging Face to increase accessibility.
Limitations:
The specific Limitations is not explicitly mentioned in this paper. Further experiments or comparative analysis may provide further clarification.
Optimized for specific hardware (NVIDIA A10G GPU), performance may vary on other hardware environments.
There is a lack of detailed information about the composition and quality of the pretraining dataset.
