This paper presents a systematic analysis of Graph-Augmented Retrieval Generation (GraphRAG), a novel paradigm that revolutionizes large-scale language model (LLM) applications specialized for domains. While existing flat text retrieval-based RAG systems suffer from complex query understanding, difficulties in integrating knowledge across distributed sources, and low system efficiency, GraphRAG addresses these challenges through a graph-structured knowledge representation, an efficient graph-based retrieval technique, and a structure-aware knowledge integration algorithm. This paper systematically analyzes the technical foundations of GraphRAG, examines current implementations in various domains, and suggests key technical challenges and promising research directions.
