This paper discusses the current status and major challenges of point of interest (POI) recommendation. POI recommendation plays a vital role in improving tourist experience, but it carries high risks in terms of time, cost, and effort. The paper critically evaluates the shortcomings of existing research in three major aspects (dataset, algorithm, and evaluation methodology) and highlights persistent problems such as lack of standardized benchmark datasets, incorrect assumptions in problem definition and model design, and inadequate handling of biases in user behavior and system performance. In addition, a structured research plan is presented for future research related to multi-stakeholder design, situation awareness, data collection, reliability, novel interactions, and real-world evaluation.
