Outline

This paper analyzes the impact of deepfake technologies, which have become more accessible due to advances in generative AI. As financial and technical barriers to entry have been lowered by advances in voice-cloning, face-swapping, and synthetic media generation tools, the risks of deepfake technologies being used for fraud, disinformation, and the deception of digital media have increased. Using cost-effective and easy-to-use tools such as Runway, Rope, and ElevenLabs, we demonstrate how realistic deepfakes can be created with limited resources, highlighting the risks to both individuals and organizations. We analyze the technical and ethical challenges of deepfake mitigation and detection, and highlight the urgency of regulatory frameworks, public awareness, and collaborative efforts to maintain trust in digital media.

Takeaways, Limitations

Takeaways:
It raises awareness about the popularization of deepfake technology and the deepening digital trust crisis it poses.
It clearly presents the risks by demonstrating the ease and accessibility of creating deepfakes through real-world examples.
It highlights the need for regulation, education, and technological responses to prevent the exploitation of deepfake technology.
Limitations:
An analysis limited to specific tools (Runway, Rope, ElevenLabs) may not comprehensively cover the full spectrum of deepfake technology.
There is a lack of discussion about the positive aspects of deepfake technology (e.g. education, entertainment).
There is a lack of specific implementation plans or effectiveness evaluations for the proposed solutions (regulation, education, etc.).
