Hi all! As a HearWeAre Global Supporter, I'm back for my second week to take you on a journey to my absolute favorite spot in London: The National Theatre (NT).
If you are a culture lover, this place is essentially your "SPOT." Located right on the South Bank of the Thames, its bold, concrete architecture (known as Brutalism) might look like a fortress, but inside, it is a playground for the imagination. Let's dive into why this theater is a masterpiece of both design and storytelling.

1. The Olivier Theatre: The Epic Heart

Named after Sir Laurence Olivier, the legendary actor and the NT's first artistic director, this is the largest and most grand of the three stages.

Modeled after the ancient Greek theater at Epidaurus, it features a fan-shaped auditorium. The stage itself is famous for its "drum revolve," a massive rotating platform that allows for incredible visual transformations.

This stage is perfect for "Epic Spectacles." Think grand Shakespearean tragedies or visually stunning family shows like ใBallet Shoesใ (running through Feb 21, 2026). The open layout means actors can engage with the entire room at once.

There are no pillars to block your view. For the best immersive experience, I recommend the Stalls (Rows C-G). It is fully step-free, ensuring everyone can enjoy the magic.

Formerly known as the Cottesloe, it was renamed after Lloyd Dorfman, a major donor who funded its state-of-the-art renovation.

Sitting in the "Pit" on the ground floor puts you right in the middle of the action. It's a very visceral experience!

Architecture: The "Atomic Power Station" Beauty

You might hear people joke that the NT looks like an "atomic power station" even King Charles III once said so! This style is called Brutalism, characterized by raw, exposed concrete. While it was controversial at first, it is now a Grade II listed heritage site and a beloved icon of Londonโs skyline.
Accessibility: A Theater for Everyone
The NT is a world leader in making art accessible. Every theater is step-free and wheelchair accessible. One of their coolest features is the Smart Caption Glasses, which provide real-time subtitles for D/deaf or hard-of-hearing guests. They also offer "Relaxed Performances" for neurodivergent audiences, ensuring that everyone feels welcome in this concrete castle.

A visit to the NT isn't complete without exploring the food scene.

Final Tips
Don't forget the Friday Rush! Every Friday at 1 PM, you can grab ยฃ10 tickets for the following week. Also, if you can't make it to London, look for NT Live screenings at your local cinema to experience these world-class performances.
