Effective prompt writing is a very important element in AI-based image generation. Clear and detailed prompts go a long way in helping you achieve the desired results. Here we will use Dall-E as an example.
The importance of using keywords
Example without using keywords: "Draw me a mountain."
Example usage of keywords: "The Alps on a spring day, with vast green grass and snow-capped peaks."
Difference: Without keywords, the AI will produce a very generic image of a mountain. On the other hand, with keywords, the AI produces a more detailed and specific image that reflects specific elements such as spring, the Alps, and green grass.
Setting the style and mood
Example of unspecified style/mood: "City night view."
Example of a style/mood: "A futuristic city night scene in a cyberpunk style, with neon lights and flashy billboards."
Difference: If you do not specify a style and mood, a generic cityscape night scene image is generated. If you specify a style and mood, the AI generates a more unique and creative image that reflects elements of a specific genre called cyberpunk.
The importance of color and lighting
Example of unspecified color/lighting: "Sunset on the beach."
Example color/lighting assignment: "A quiet beach sunset with red and orange hues, soft golden sand."
Difference: If you don't specify color and lighting, the AI will generate a basic sunset scene. If you specify color and lighting, the AI will generate a more emotional and detailed image by reflecting details such as red, orange, and golden sand. To be honest, the latter is a bit scary because it feels like the day before the apocalypse. The golden sand feels almost unreflected.
When writing prompts like this, specifying keywords, style, mood, color, lighting, etc. specifically allows AI to create more accurate and detailed images. Effectively conveying the user’s intent to AI is the key to prompt engineering.
The most frequently asked question by those who create images with Midjourney or Stable Diffusion is whether commands such as '4k' and '8k' work. Strictly speaking, they do not work. This is because the model understands that this is simply a request for high definition, and does not actually output that resolution. However, it is not impossible to implement that resolution if you create it in the form of outpainting.
