One year since the launch of ChatGPT—has the search market actually changed?

Haebom
At the end of October 2022, chatGPT launched open beta, sparking conversations about threats to the search market. In fact, MS’s Bing quickly adopted GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 one after another to boost its presence in the search market. At the time, most people just shrugged it off, but now a year has passed, and the results are in. So, has Google’s dominance in the search market really declined?

Google Search Market Share: "No Issues"

According to some recent reports and data analyses, there have been claims that ChatGPT, the AI chatbot, is eating into Google’s search market share. But these claims seem to be overstated for now. In reality, ChatGPT’s monthly traffic is just 2% of Google’s, so its impact on Google’s dominance in the search market is minimal.
According to StatCounter, Google's global search market share stood at 91.53% in October 2023, the lowest recorded in the past 12 months . However, this is seen as a result of other factors rather than the impact of ChatGPT. In fact, Google's share has remained relatively stable since August 2015 (even yearly, it's 90.7%).

Microsoft’s Bing slipped slightly compared to last year. In fact, usage has decreased year-over-year. The overall ranking remains the same (still low). Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is warning that AI technologies could actually strengthen Google’s grip even further.

Hey, are you crying?

ChatGPT’s monthly traffic has risen to 55 million, which is 2% of Google’s. This shows that AI-based platforms like ChatGPT are gradually expanding their user base, but it’s still nowhere near threatening Google’s dominance.
This data on the search market offers important insights for marketers. While AI has the potential to transform search, for now, it’s clear that Google’s dominant position since 2015 remains unchanged. The effects of Google, ChatGPT, and AI in the search market will definitely be worth watching in the future, but for the moment, there are no obvious changes happening.
