[Editorial] What we need is social support, not ‘self-development’

Over the last few years, the publishing world has been swept up in a self-improvement craze: pushing yourself, working out hard, following a healthy diet, exercising, making friends, and trying to be happier.
But no matter how many books come out or get read, Koreans still don’t feel happy or healthy, and nothing from those books really gets put into practice. I used to read a lot of self-help books myself, but I’ve recently realized just how much time I wasted trying to improve my life without ever addressing the real heart of the issue—just circling the edges instead.
To be honest, most of the issues Koreans face aren’t ones that can just be solved by individuals. In a culture where long work hours and overtime are common, it’s tough to find the time or energy to invest in hobbies or self-development. And it’s a fact that deep-rooted issues—like sky-high real estate and education costs, or unstable job situations—can’t really be solved by personal effort alone.
Aren’t people in the Nordic countries supposed to be happy...?
Living a happy and healthy life isn’t just about how hard you try as an individual—it’s determined by the larger system you’re part of. Denmark, for example, is often named the happiest country in the world, and it’s no coincidence: their secret lies in generous social support for everyone.
The Danish government runs all sorts of welfare programs to guarantee a basic standard of living, like healthcare, education, childcare, maternity leave, and unemployment benefits. They also put a lot of work into building public infrastructure to boost people’s happiness. With a 34-hour work week, work-life balance is a big deal, and working too much is actually seen as a bad thing.
What’s really interesting is that 57% of Danes say they wouldn’t quit their jobs even if they won the lottery. For them, work is just one part of life—not everything—because they’re working for personal fulfillment and happiness. Their sense of community and voluntary civic participation is also very strong.
Of course, all this comes with the price of high taxes—as is always the case in the Nordic countries. Still, it seems worth it if it leads to a better quality of life. It may not be easy to introduce the Danish system straightaway in Korea, where diligence and self-made success have been long emphasized. But isn’t it time to recognize the problems that come from too much individualism, and shift our thinking toward taking care of each other as a shared community?
Ultimately, it’s the support and care from society that make it possible for individuals to lead happy lives. What we need isn’t another flashy success story or yet another self-help book pushing personal effort, but a robust safety net that looks after everyone’s well-being. With the election season approaching, lots of stories are making the rounds, and I felt we need more discussion about society—so I wanted to share these thoughts.
I was also a bit confused about this, so I asked AI about individualism and liberalism.
Individualism and liberalism have some common ground, but they’re not the same concept.
Individualism is the idea that values an individual's freedom, rights, and choices. In individualism, a person's goals, desires, and achievements are put ahead of those of the group or society. It emphasizes autonomy and independence and believes interference from the group should be kept to a minimum.
In contrast, liberalism is an ideology that looks to guarantee individual freedom throughout politics, the economy, and society as a whole. Liberalism emphasizes fundamental personal rights, the rule of law, a market economy, and freedoms of speech, religion, and thought. It promotes keeping state interference small and respecting the autonomy of both individuals and civil society.
If individualism is about focusing on the life of the individual, liberalism is about institutionally securing individual freedom. Liberalism is built on individualism, but stresses that one’s freedom shouldn’t infringe on someone else’s freedom.
So, even though individualism and liberalism are related, they aren’t the same. Where individualism is an idea about one’s way of living, liberalism is more about the political and economic system.
Maybe what individuals can truly do is offer heartfelt support and encouragement?
Personally, I think raising taxes to create stronger social welfare shouldn’t be seen as populism or a political stance, but as something to consider from a different angle. Lately, I feel (maybe it’s just me) that Korea has grown far more individualistic. People have become much more indifferent to others’ lives than with old-school liberalism, almost detached when thinking about society. In a way, it seems like ‘Alppano’ (“Why should I care?”) has become everyone’s basic stance.
Like it or not, we all have to live within this fence called society. Whether you’re a billionaire or someone with nothing but your body and enthusiasm, we live in an interconnected world. I once set up a ‘small group just for giving compliments’ with some friends. It was really just a KakaoTalk group chat, and I ran it pretty well for a while, but a few years ago I couldn’t keep it going due to personal circumstances. Recently, though, a friend I hadn’t seen in ages told me that that group chat really meant a lot to him—it gave him real strength.
To wrap up
I find myself wondering if what we really need isn’t ‘more, more, more’ but actually just applause and encouragement. Maybe sometimes a gentle pat on the back is worth more than a huge reward. Maybe, regardless of policies or politics, it’s when people can truly lean on each other that we become better, that we can be part of a better society. Is it too idealistic to imagine a world where we open up and sincerely root for one another? Just some thoughts that came to mind, so I jotted them down.
