In 2019, Jeff Bezos announced an ambitious goal for Amazon to become carbon neutral by 2040. It was a strong signal that Amazon was starting to take responsibility for the environment while pursuing a forward-looking business strategy, with a particular focus on reducing emissions in logistics and delivery (from the Paris climate agreement that Trump withdrew from...).
Amazon's rechargeable delivery van
Amazon made a major investment in electric vehicle startup Rivian and ordered 100,000 custom electric delivery vans, which was a decisive step in Amazon’s full-scale adoption of electric vehicles. That same year, Amazon began installing charging infrastructure at several of its warehouses across the United States. This required collaboration with power companies, and efforts were made to respond to new forms of large-scale electricity demand.
In 2021, Amazon accelerated the expansion of its electric vehicle charging infrastructure, installing more than 17,000 chargers in more than 120 warehouses across the U.S. These chargers power a variety of electric delivery vehicles, including Rivian electric vans. This has enabled Amazon to significantly reduce its carbon footprint during delivery, and has made it the largest operator of private electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the U.S.
Amazon has set a goal to power its own operations with 100% renewable energy, part of a company-wide carbon reduction strategy that makes electric vehicles more sustainable. Meanwhile, Amazon has adjusted its original goal of making all deliveries carbon-free by 2030 to a more comprehensive climate goal, reflecting Amazon’s commitment to both strategic flexibility and environmental responsibility.
Amazon’s journey to expand its electric vehicle charging infrastructure is serving as a model for green logistics innovation and is an opportunity for other companies to explore sustainable operating methods. These efforts are expected to play a significant role in responding to the global climate crisis.
It is very moving to see that Amazon has quietly and successfully laid this infrastructure and is developing it in a way that can create synergy with their existing logistics industry.
