Short answer (as of August 2026): Most people in India are best served by one or two credit cards. The exact number matters far less than whether you pay every bill in full and on time. Disciplined spenders with clear reward goals can handle three or four; anyone still learning to clear dues should stay at one.

Does having more cards lower your credit score?
No. Holding several cards does not by itself reduce your CIBIL score. Missed payments and high utilisation are what hurt it. In fact, an extra card raises your total available limit, which can lower your credit utilisation ratio and help your score.
Worked example: Spending ₹40,000/month on one card with a ₹50,000 limit = 80% utilisation (a level lenders dislike). The same ₹40,000 split across two ₹50,000-limit cards = about 40% each. Same spending, healthier profile.
When a personal loan beats multiple cards
For a large one-time expense (medical bill, wedding, home repair), spreading it across several credit cards is usually the wrong move — unpaid card balances often carry 36–45% annualised interest. A single personal loan, from a bank or an RBI-registered app such as True Balance, KreditBee, or Navi, gives a fixed EMI and a clear end date instead of a revolving balance. Compare the total interest either way before deciding.
Common questions
Does closing an old card hurt my score? It can — it lowers your total limit (raising utilisation) and shortens average account age. A no-annual-fee card is often better kept open and lightly used.
How long between new card applications? Space them by several months. Each application is a hard enquiry; many in a short window signal credit hunger.
Is one card enough? For many people in India, yes. One card paid in full every month builds a strong history on its own.
