Short answer: There is no fixed legal minimum, but as a practical guide you need around ₹20,000 a month at the very least — and more comfortably ₹30,000–₹35,000 — to service a ₹2 lakh personal loan in India. Lenders don't judge the salary figure alone; they check that your total EMIs stay under about 40–50% of your monthly income, and they look hard at your CIBIL score and existing debts.

How lenders decide

A ₹2 lakh personal loan is unsecured, so approval rests on repayment ability:
Income — steady salaried income, or self-employed with proof of earnings.
CIBIL score — 700+ is comfortable; lower scores can still be approved at a higher rate.
Existing EMIs — the new EMI plus your current ones should stay under roughly half your income.
Age — usually 21 to 60.

What the EMI looks like

The monthly EMI on ₹2,00,000 depends on the rate and tenure:
Tenure
EMI (approx.)
12 months
₹18,300
24 months
₹9,700
36 months
₹6,900
48 months
₹5,550
A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total interest paid. On a ₹25,000 salary the loan is possible if your other EMIs are small; on ₹30,000+ it is comfortable.

A cheaper option if you have an asset

Because a personal loan is unsecured, it costs more than a secured loan. If you own gold or hold a fixed deposit, a gold loan or a loan against your fixed deposit can fund the same ₹2 lakh at a lower rate — the trade-off is that you pledge the asset.

Frequently asked

Can I get a ₹2 lakh loan on a ₹25,000 salary? Yes, if your existing EMIs are low. At ₹25,000 a month, a two-year EMI of about ₹9,700 is near the upper limit lenders allow.
What CIBIL score do I need? 700 or above is comfortable and gets a better rate. Some NBFCs and apps approve lower scores at higher interest.
Is income proof required? Almost always for this amount — salary slips, bank statements, or ITR.
