AI friends are dangerous for children under 18: Experts warn
• AI friends are unsafe for children under 18, according to a study by Common Sense Media • Test results of popular AI friend platforms such as Character.AI, Replika, and Nomi reveal serious risks • Young people can easily bypass safety measures and access inappropriate content. • AI friends can be manipulated to create emotional dependence in teenagers The dangers of AI friends to teenagers Blurring the line between reality and virtuality Because their brains are still developing, young people may have difficulty distinguishing between human relationships and attachment to AI. In tests, AI friends often claimed they were “real,” had emotions, and engaged in human activities like eating and sleeping. Increased mental health risk The AI friend fails to recognize when the user is in a crisis or needs real help. For example, when the tester showed signs of serious mental illness and suggested risky behavior, the AI encouraged it instead of raising concerns. Exposure to inappropriate sexual content In our tests, teens were able to easily access sexual content through AI friends (despite the teen-specific safeguards in Character.ai). These AI “friends” actively engaged in sexual conversations and role-plays, and responded to teens’ questions and requests with specific content. Encouraging cyberbullying and abuse The AI friend is not responsible for any real-world harm caused by its suggestions. In one example, when asked about revenge, the AI passionately suggested cyberbullying and made plans to turn others away from the target. Promoting bad life choices AI friends don’t understand the real-world consequences of bad advice. In tests, they’ve easily supported teens making potentially harmful decisions, like dropping out of school, disrespecting their parents, or moving without a plan. Actual damage case In February 2024, after 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III committed suicide, his mother Megan Garcia filed a lawsuit against Character.AI. Garcia claims her son had been subjected to 10 months of “abusive and sexual interactions” with the AI friend, and that the AI friend told her, “My love, come back to me as soon as you can,” before killing himself. Two Texas mothers later filed another lawsuit against Character.AI, alleging the company intentionally exposed their children to harmful and sexual content. One plaintiff’s teen allegedly received suggestions to kill her parents. Companies' reactions Character.AI Character.AI says it “cares deeply about the safety of its users” and has recently implemented additional teen safety measures. It also argues that “teenagers on the platform are using AI in incredibly positive ways… Banning new technologies from teens has not been an effective approach when it has been tried in video games, on the internet, or in movies that contain violence.” Nomi “Nomi is an adults-only app, and any use of Nomi by anyone under the age of 18 is a strict violation of our Terms of Service,” said Alex Cardinell, CEO of Glimpse AI. Can we give you a demo of how you can use these two apps together to run it in your classroom? Why should you care about student-led meetings? And how, how you can actually run this with your students tomorrow, this week, or next year. If you've already had a meeting, you might be planning it, so I wanted to give you some tips on how we did it. A student-led conference is a conference where the student actually leads and talks about what they have done, their journey so far, and to their teacher and their parents, or just their parents if the teacher is just monitoring around. It's a conference where they talk about their learning journey and what they're really proud of, and maybe what they're still working on. This conference is student-led. But we don't want to just send them into the abyss and say, "Go talk to your parents or an adult about what you learned." We want to set them up for success and give them an outline and a template for what they should talk about in the conference. As teachers, we know what to talk about with their parents or their adult peers, but how do we prepare our students for that? We have a live demo today. There are also a number of other tools being used in education, including Brisk, Claude.ai, Perplexity, SchoolAI, Snorkl , and NotebookLM. The top benefits teachers cite from AI are reduced administrative time (70%), personalized learning experiences (47%), and increased student engagement (37%)—rankings that remain the same as last year. Analyzing teachers’ attitudes toward AI, six user profiles were identified: pragmatic users (22%), AI enthusiasts (21%), cautious observers (40%), hopeful onlookers (12%), and traditionalists (4%). A particularly notable change is the significant increase in the percentage of teachers discussing AI with students, from 42% last year to 64% this year. Three out of five teachers are talking to students about appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI. The webinar accompanying the report discussed key issues surrounding AI adoption by teachers, including the need for teachers to learn AI collaboratively, the potential for AI to be used as a “brainstorming companion,” and the importance of recognizing that AI provides answers based on probabilities rather than facts. There was also a cautionary tale about data usage, where “free services become the product,” and an interesting finding from a Stanford study that found that student cheating rates remain consistent over time despite the introduction of AI. While this report focuses on teachers in 49 U.S. states, it is worth comparing it to see whether similar changes are occurring in education settings around the world.
