Update News

We bring you Padlet updates and announcements.
Introducing a new table layout
Convert your Padlet into an interactive spreadsheet with multimedia, comments, and smart column types. In 2023, we introduced custom post fields to help collect structured data, but we were working towards a bigger goal. Today, we're introducing the Table Layout , a way to view and interact with your padlet as an interactive table, where every post becomes a row and every field becomes a column. Table layouts give you the organizational power of a spreadsheet and features you won’t find in Google Sheets. You can upload images, insert videos, record audio, and add pictures while maintaining the structure of rows and columns. See it in action See how the table layout changes the existing padlet. Parent Contact List Previous : Individual posts scattered throughout Padlet and inconsistently formatted. Difficult to keep track of. Afterwards : A neat and organized table that you can instantly filter by your "Text" or "Email" preferences, sort by name, or quickly scan. Managing a reading group Previous : Discussion post ratings were buried in the text. It was hard to see what was being read and what was coming up next. Afterwards : Each book is on its own row, with clear ratings, sortable by genre or discussion date, and filterable by status to distinguish between "scheduled" and "read." Want to use it for more than just a reading list? Try using the table layout for class grading, student progress tracking, team work boards, and feedback forms. It’s flexible enough to fit any workflow. More than just spreadsheets Multimedia Anywhere Unlike traditional spreadsheets, tables can contain rich media: you can add profile pictures to your roster, insert reference videos for grading, and include audio recordings for language practice. Smart fields, filtering, sorting All columns provide a powerful way to understand the data type and organize information. Date columns can be sorted chronologically, numeric columns can be sorted numerically, and single-select columns can be sorted by a custom order. Filter instantly with single-select options. Each field type automatically applies formats to keep your data clean. Comments and reactions right at your fingertips You can click on any row to add a comment and start a discussion about that particular item. We also added a dedicated panel on the left to show comments and reactions for easy access, since in a wide table, those columns can end up on the right end. A powerful combination

Significantly improved convenience for school administrators
It’s the first week of school. Your middle school gym teacher has suddenly resigned, a family of raccoons has taken up residence in the science lab, and someone has accidentally unshared the entire district’s student roster file. 847 students are now locked out of their assignments. Parents are calling, teachers are panicking, and IT is telling them it will take two days to manually restore the file. You wake up with your heart racing, already mentally writing an email to your IT support team. Then you look at your phone and it’s 2:47 a.m. on July 15. It was just a nightmare. But the student roster outage feels so real. In fact, somewhere out there, a school administrator might be experiencing this right now. We’ve been working on improvements to make this nightmare a thing of the past. Introducing new features in Padlet for Schools. Student roster errors now have a restore button It happens more often than you might think that a school accidentally unshares a student roster, and this can result in the entire school district losing access to Padlet immediately. Previously, we had to collect user data from the school and run a custom recovery program to recover it. The recovery process was complex and time-consuming. Padlet Support can now restore access to all users who were removed during a student roster operation with a single command. We’ve also added the ability to download a CSV file of all users before enabling the student roster feature, so customer operations can see exactly which users will be affected before running a sync. Automatic LMS class integration eliminates the need for manual group setup User groups in the LMS (Learning Management System) allow teachers to share Padlets with entire groups of students with one click. Previously, creating user groups required the customer operations team to work individually with each group of teachers. This involved individual conversations, manual setup, and potential for miscommunication for each user group, which was then repeated for every class in the school. Now when a school administrator sets up an LMS, groups are automatically created, students are added, and updated. Users are automatically invited, added to the library, added to user groups when enrolled in LMS classes, and removed from user groups when no longer enrolled. One of the technical challenges was that LMS platforms generally follow the LTI standard, but each implements certain features differently. For example, Canvas uses dynamic identifiers for users. This required special handling for grade transfer when a student drops and re-enrolls. Some LMSs required custom settings for automatic permission requests. We built platform-specific handling while maintaining a unified user experience for schools. Performance improvements for teachers with a lot of material Teachers with hundreds of padlets were having trouble using the LMS integration feature. When trying to load the entire collection of materials, the screen would become unresponsive. We’ve reworked the deep link wall selection feature to support large users, and now it intelligently sorts and displays the 100 most recently updated walls that the user is a creator or administrator of. We’ve also improved handling when the LMS doesn’t provide proper camera or microphone permissions. Instead of showing a generic error message, we now prompt users to open Padlet in a new tab to continue their assignment. Other convenience improvements Grade transfer fix : Addresses special cases for LMSs that use dynamic identifiers and improves automatic permission request Auto-update name : Usernames are automatically updated when added to your school library via the LMS or student roster. Enhanced security : LMS settings URLs are now securely handled through our security infrastructure Assignment naming improvements : LMS assignment names no longer automatically overwrite Padlet names Notification improvements : Less noisy notifications and better exception handling for LMS class integrations Simplify user management : School administrators can now search for multiple users at once by separating emails and usernames with a space or comma Coming soon features

[Update] Padlet Usage Analytics and Insights
Introducing Padlet Analysis feature Creating resources is great, but knowing their impact is even better. That’s why we’re introducing simple yet powerful analytics for Padlets. Now you can track total views, unique visitors, and engagement times for your Padlets. Check the reach of the padlet Open any board or sandbox, click on the three dots in the action bar, and select "Details." At the bottom, you can see the analytics for your Padlet: total views, unique visitors, and engagement time. The data is updated approximately every minute to show you the current impact of your Padlet. What these numbers mean Views shows how many times your Padlet has been visited, Visitors tells you how many unique visitors have viewed your content, and Engagement Time shows you how much time everyone has spent looking at your Padlet. So if you have a bulletin board for your class, you can see not only how many times it was accessed, but also how many students actually viewed it. We calculate these metrics in a privacy-friendly way that doesn’t track individual users, so we respect their privacy while still providing valuable insights. Keep it simple We've streamlined the analytics panel to focus on the most important factors, like the reach of your Padlet. If you want more detailed information about your posts, comments, or reactions, you can export your Padlet to a spreadsheet. When can I use it? Analytics features are currently available on the web and mobile versions of Padlet. Simply open any board or sandbox to see the statistics. What are your plans for the future? This is just the beginning of our analytics journey. We are developing more advanced metrics to better understand how Padlet is being used.

Visual and sound effects for sandbox
Pop-up books transform flat pages into amazing interactive experiences. We ’ve brought that magic to Padlet Sandbox , along with new sound and visual effects. What's new? You can add special effects to your sandbox that react whenever you click. When celebrating an achievement , you can pop confetti or add fireworks to an important announcement to make your content more engaging. Combine these visual effects with sound effects like applause , ding-dongs , or animal sounds to create a multi-sensory experience. Check it out for yourself. These effects open up new possibilities for sandbox creators. Check out this US Climate Map Project . Clicking on each region opens a new card with interactive buttons and emojis. Check it out! Or try the game "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?". The sound effects alone will tell you if you're right or wrong. It's much more fun than playing with pen and paper! How to set up Adding special effects to your sandbox is simple: Add objects to the sandbox. Click on the object and select "fx". Choose from 6 visual effects and 181 sound effects. When viewing in play mode, clicking on an object will execute the selected effect. Good to know Each object can have one visual effect and one sound effect. The effect only works in Play mode. As with other sandbox tools, you can disable contributors' access to effects if you don't want them to. Available right now Sound and visual effects are instantly available for web and mobile. Are you reading till the end? Fun fact: Since we built this feature using Airtable as the backend , it’s super easy to maintain and extend our special effects library. Let us know what sound or visual effects you’d like us to add next! [Cue applause!] 🎉👏

Teaching AI a new language
Have you ever wondered how apps are translated into other languages? Typically, this involves sending thousands of words to human translators who carefully translate every button, message, and menu item. This is not only time-consuming, but also difficult to maintain consistency in translation. Phrases that appear in different places may be translated differently each time, which can be confusing for users. We're trying something new: using AI to translate Padlet. How it works Our new approach combines the speed and consistency of AI with human expertise. First, we select a language for which there is an existing translation—either one we speak or one that has previously been translated by humans. This allows us to verify the quality of the AI output. Using ChatGPT o1, we translate all text in Padlet, using existing translations as examples. AI translates similar phrases consistently across the platform. These translations are then reviewed by linguists to ensure they are accurate and sound natural to native speakers. This hybrid process gives us the best results: consistent translations generated by AI that allow us to quickly release new features, while human experts add important nuance and cultural understanding that machines cannot replicate. Test in two languages We start this new translation system with two very different languages. Urdu : A major global language that will make Padlet more accessible to millions of users. Urdu’s rich linguistic features and unique script make it a perfect case for testing our AI-assisted translation process. Shakespearean English : A fun addition we’ve been wanting to implement since 2020. Now, with AI, we can transform modern English into clear, theatrical language that adds drama without compromising comprehension. Early Results The results were very promising. The AI translations were surprisingly consistent. Whenever a phrase appeared in multiple places, it was translated the same way every time. This allowed our linguists to focus on fine-tuning these consistent translations instead of starting from scratch. Try it yourself Want to explore Padlet in these new languages? Just visit your account settings and select your preferred language from the menu. Whether you want to use Padlet in Urdu or add some Shakespearean drama to your board, the choice is yours. Future Prospects With the addition of Urdu and Shakespearean English, Padlet now supports 44 languages. This is just the beginning of our journey with AI-assisted translation. As we improve this process, we will be able to add more languages more efficiently, making Padlet a truly accessible platform for users around the world.

Copy protection
A new content protection feature is introduced. Content creation takes time and effort. Whether you’re recording detailed video feedback for your students or sharing confidential documents with your team, you want your content to stay where it’s meant to be. For this reason, we are introducing Copy Protection, a new setting that lets you control how your content can be accessed and shared. When this feature is enabled on Padlet, visitors will not be able to download files or copy your work. Protected Items When copy protection is enabled, only Padlet administrators can: Download attachments to posts Export Padlet to PDF, Image, CSV Make a remake or copy Direct link access to attachments Duplicate or transfer a post This comprehensive protection helps ensure that your content stays exactly where it’s intended. How to set up Enabling copy protection is as easy as a few clicks: Open the settings panel of the board or sandbox Find “Copy Protection” under “Content” Select "Disable All" from the drop-down menu Real-world benefits This feature is especially valuable when: Teachers conducting video discussions who want to prevent the recording from being downloaded Language instructors who want their students to interact directly with content rather than using translation tools Teams that need to keep confidential information only within the platform Anyone who wants more control over their intellectual property Copy protection is currently available on both the board and the sandbox. We built this feature because you asked for it. It was one of the most requested additions, and we’re happy to help keep your content safe. Please keep sending us your feedback – it helps us make Padlet a better service for everyone.

Select the tools to display in the sandbox
The first day we tested Padlet Sandbox internally, we were in an all-hands video call. We thought it would be a quick demo, but everyone was so excitedly doodling, posting GIFs, sharing memes that we didn’t hear a single word of the presentation. We were just trying out new features. If adults can do this, can you imagine what would happen if we gave these tools to middle school students? That's why we decided that some restrictions were necessary, and as a result, we launched the Sandbox Tool Restriction feature this time. Introducing new features In the future, you can choose to use only the tools you need for collaboration. When holding an idea meeting, you can turn on only the memo function, when creating a photo album, you can leave only the upload function, and when taking a writing class, you can turn off all distracting elements such as drawing and searching. When you turn off the tool, it will disappear from the toolbar and the shortcut keys will not work. This setting applies equally to both web and mobile, and when you change it, it will be reflected to all participants immediately. However, the administrator who created the sandbox can use all the functions at any time, so don't worry. Set up Create a new sandbox Open Settings In the 'Content' menu, find the 'Available Tools' item Just select or deselect the tools you want and you're done. Tip : Want to know exactly what your collaborators will actually see? Open the sandbox in a secret window. As an admin, you can always see all the tools in the regular window, but in secret mode, you can experience it from your collaborators’ perspective. Use Cases We’ve learned from experience that it’s easy to get distracted when there are too many options. Here’s how different groups use this feature to stay focused: Teachers can create note-only sandboxes for intensive writing practice. Teams can turn off all search options and conduct distraction-free brainstorming sessions. Event organizers can create a dedicated gallery for uploading submissions. Workshop facilitators can create sandboxes where only drawing is allowed for visual thinking. Cat owners can disable the laser pointer feature to prevent damage to their computer screens Future plans This is just the beginning of customizing the sandbox. We are working on attachment placeholders that will allow you to request specific types of attachments, which will make the sandbox even more useful. Until then, experiment with different tool combinations, and if your next company demo goes perfectly as planned... well, that's fun, right?

New shapes and connectors for the sandbox
First there was the circle. Then came the square. Our family of shapes is now growing: arrows, lines, triangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, hexagons, and new speech bubbles. We're introducing these new shapes to the Padlet sandbox, along with connectors to help you connect your ideas. New shapes for new ideas The Shapes menu now includes triangles for indicating directions, rhombuses for decision points, parallelograms for input/output, speech bubbles for annotations, and hexagons for geometry lovers. These shapes have been added to the existing set, bringing the total to 12. With 9 colors and 3 fill options, there are a total of 324 possible combinations to bring your diagrams to life. Padlet July Update: Evolving Educational Tools with Automation, AI Voice, and Grade Management
Improving the safety net: Automated moderation of media comments Automatically blocks inappropriate images, videos, and audio comments to ensure safe collaboration Previously, you could add images, videos, and audio to posts, and you could comment on posts, but you couldn’t add these media types to comments. This year, we’re combining these features to now allow you to add media to comments. Likewise, Safety Net previously moderated images, videos, and audio on posts, and moderated text comments. Now, with the addition of media comments, Safety Net has expanded. Safety Net will now moderate images, videos, and audio comments. How the safety net works Safety Net is our automated content moderation system. When automated moderation is enabled, Safety Net reviews posts and comments for inappropriate content. If inappropriate content is detected, it notifies Padlet administrators so they can decide whether to approve or reject. When we launched Safety Net last year, we only moderated the text of posts. Since then, we’ve improved it to also moderate images, audio, and video in posts and comments. Save time with automated arbitration Before Safety Net, posts on Padlet either went live immediately or had to be manually approved by the Padlet owner. The former felt risky in certain environments, like middle school classrooms, and the latter was boring. We know that Padlet users spend valuable time manually approving everything to keep Padlets safe in the classroom. Automated moderation is one way to save them a lot of time. Nearly 2.5 million Padlets have been moderated with Safety Net to date. Use a safety net To turn on automatic moderation, go to your Padlet settings. Under Content, go to Moderation and set it to Automatic. Now, all posts and comments on your Padlet will be automatically monitored. It’s that simple. You can enable automatic moderation on web and mobile. Safety Net is your classroom helper Safety Net can make mistakes, and its standards may differ from yours. It may block posts that you consider safe and allow posts that you consider harmful. That’s why Safety Net doesn’t automatically remove flagged content. Ultimately, you decide whether content is safe for your community. Automating Padlet You can schedule a freeze or unfreeze of your padlet up to one year in advance. You can post without visiting Padlet. You can post manually with a browser extension or systematically using the public API . You can also schedule posts. However, you must visit Padlet directly to change your settings. We want to make it easier for Padlet users to send, receive, and process information on Padlet, so we're adding automation features. The first version of Automation will allow you to schedule your Padlets to be frozen or unfrozen up to a year in advance. How Automation Works Automation has two components: triggers and actions. The trigger is what starts the automation, and the action is what happens as a result. Our first set of automations is very simple. We have one trigger called time and two actions called freeze and unfreeze. So we can schedule the padlet to freeze, and we can schedule the padlet to unfreeze. You can set it to automate and forget about it. When you freeze a Padlet, no one can add, edit, or delete anything in it. If you want students to post to the Padlet by a certain time, you can freeze the Padlet to enforce a due date. Or, if you want students to post to the Padlet only after a certain date, you can freeze the Padlet when you create it and then unfreeze it later to start accepting submissions. Without automation, you have to go back and forth to freeze and unfreeze your Padlet. If you prefer to manage your reminders and tasks with calendar notifications, sticky notes, and your iron-clad memory, we applaud you. If you don’t have spare brain cells like us, we recommend automation. This lets you schedule your Padlet to freeze from the moment you create it. One less reason to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about forgetting something important. Accessing the Automation Panel To add an automation to your Padlet, click the three dots to open the Additional Padlet Actions menu, then click Automation. Only Padlet administrators can schedule automations.
