Improving the safety net: Automated moderation of media comments Automatically blocks inappropriate images, videos, and audio comments to ensure safe collaboration Previously, you could add images, videos, and audio to posts, and you could comment on posts, but you couldn’t add these media types to comments. This year, we’re combining these features to now allow you to add media to comments. Likewise, Safety Net previously moderated images, videos, and audio on posts, and moderated text comments. Now, with the addition of media comments, Safety Net has expanded. Safety Net will now moderate images, videos, and audio comments. How the safety net works Safety Net is our automated content moderation system. When automated moderation is enabled, Safety Net reviews posts and comments for inappropriate content. If inappropriate content is detected, it notifies Padlet administrators so they can decide whether to approve or reject. When we launched Safety Net last year, we only moderated the text of posts. Since then, we’ve improved it to also moderate images, audio, and video in posts and comments. Save time with automated arbitration Before Safety Net, posts on Padlet either went live immediately or had to be manually approved by the Padlet owner. The former felt risky in certain environments, like middle school classrooms, and the latter was boring. We know that Padlet users spend valuable time manually approving everything to keep Padlets safe in the classroom. Automated moderation is one way to save them a lot of time. Nearly 2.5 million Padlets have been moderated with Safety Net to date. Use a safety net To turn on automatic moderation, go to your Padlet settings. Under Content, go to Moderation and set it to Automatic. Now, all posts and comments on your Padlet will be automatically monitored. It’s that simple. You can enable automatic moderation on web and mobile. Safety Net is your classroom helper Safety Net can make mistakes, and its standards may differ from yours. It may block posts that you consider safe and allow posts that you consider harmful. That’s why Safety Net doesn’t automatically remove flagged content. Ultimately, you decide whether content is safe for your community. Automating Padlet You can schedule a freeze or unfreeze of your padlet up to one year in advance. You can post without visiting Padlet. You can post manually with a browser extension or systematically using the public API . You can also schedule posts. However, you must visit Padlet directly to change your settings. We want to make it easier for Padlet users to send, receive, and process information on Padlet, so we're adding automation features. The first version of Automation will allow you to schedule your Padlets to be frozen or unfrozen up to a year in advance. How Automation Works Automation has two components: triggers and actions. The trigger is what starts the automation, and the action is what happens as a result. Our first set of automations is very simple. We have one trigger called time and two actions called freeze and unfreeze. So we can schedule the padlet to freeze, and we can schedule the padlet to unfreeze. You can set it to automate and forget about it. When you freeze a Padlet, no one can add, edit, or delete anything in it. If you want students to post to the Padlet by a certain time, you can freeze the Padlet to enforce a due date. Or, if you want students to post to the Padlet only after a certain date, you can freeze the Padlet when you create it and then unfreeze it later to start accepting submissions. Without automation, you have to go back and forth to freeze and unfreeze your Padlet. If you prefer to manage your reminders and tasks with calendar notifications, sticky notes, and your iron-clad memory, we applaud you. If you don’t have spare brain cells like us, we recommend automation. This lets you schedule your Padlet to freeze from the moment you create it. One less reason to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about forgetting something important. Accessing the Automation Panel To add an automation to your Padlet, click the three dots to open the Additional Padlet Actions menu, then click Automation. Only Padlet administrators can schedule automations.

A new way to collect and organize content published in Padlet. Padlet is at its core a tool to help people collect and organize information. Previously, it was more suited to collecting and organizing free-form text, and had limitations in collecting structured data. For example, a teacher planning a party needs to provide students with clear instructions for posting birthdays in a consistent format. If they deviate from these instructions, Padlet will have difficulty understanding and sorting them. If some students write the month as text, such as "May 7," and others write it as numbers, such as "5/7," Padlet will have difficulty interpreting them. What are custom fields? In January 2024, we introduced custom text fields, which are additional input fields that can be added to the post composer. Initially, we only allowed new custom text fields. The new custom fields allow you to perform data validation and custom formatting on your responses. Number field Custom number fields only accept numeric values. If you enter a non-numeric value, the field will reject it. Numeric fields can also automatically format responses. If one contributor enters 1000 and another enters 1000.00, you can configure Padlet to display both values as 1,000.00. You can also choose to automatically format your text to match your visitors' local format. With this option, visitors from the United States will see 1,000.00, while visitors from France will see 1.000,00. Date field A date field requires the publisher to select a date. You can use a field prompt to guide visitors to select a date. Like number fields, date fields automatically format responses and provide formats tailored to individual visitors. In local formats, visitors in Europe will see the date first, while those in the United States will see the month first. You can also add times to custom date fields, allowing for more specific input. Single selection field Single-select fields allow you to add multiple-choice questions to your post creator. When creating a new post, you can choose one of the preset options, and your selection will appear in the published post. If you want to know whether your students prefer chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet cake, you can create a single choice field and let them choose the flavor. Button field The Button field asks publishers to add a link that will appear as a clickable button. When setting up a button field, you can choose the text that will appear on the button to let your visitors know what type of link they should add. If a teacher planning a birthday party wants to play their students’ favorite songs, they can add a button field called “Favorite song.” Students can post YouTube and Spotify links and click the button to make their day even more special. Sortable by custom fields Custom fields help you organize your Padlet because they ensure consistent data formatting. When you collect birthdays using a custom date field, you don’t have to worry about whether the day or the month comes first. You can always sort by date to plan your party in order. The same principle applies to numeric fields and single-select fields. Sorting by single-select allows you to group posts by selection, while sorting by numeric fields allows you to sort your Padlet in numeric order.

Use images to encourage collaboration, communicate ideas, or share funny memes. On a chilly autumn day in September 1940, 18-year-old Marcel Ravidat was walking through the dense forests of Montignac, France, with his dog Robot. When Robot began sniffing around the hole left by an uprooted tree, Marcel discovered a dark passageway descending 50 feet into the ground. Marcel believed he had found the secret passage to the legendary Lascaux estate, but what he had discovered was much more important. Marcel discovered the Lascaux caves, which contain over 600 paintings by people 20,000 years ago. These images depict people, animals, and abstract forms, and convey the truth that we have long used visual images to understand existence. It is our instinct to express life through images. Starting today, you can now satisfy this natural human desire in the comments section of Padlet. You can now add images as comments in Padlet. If you open the attachment picker in the comment, you'll find an option to draw like you did in the Lascaux cave. You can also upload a file, add a GIF, take a photo, or create an AI image with 'I can't draw'. This update will make the comments section of Padlet more collaborative and fun. Comment on a design Padlet with the latest graphics, or comment on a friend's birthday Padlet with a funny GIF. I can't promise that your Padlet comments section will ever be as deep and insightful as the Lascaux Cave, but it will definitely have a lot of GIFs.

Automatically create a copy of your Padlet by sharing an auto-regenerated link. Use as a teacher You are a teacher. You create a worksheet in Padlet. You want to have 24 students each create their own version of the worksheet. In the past, you had two options: copy the Padlet 24 times and share one for each student, or share the basic Padlet and ask each student to recreate the Padlet on their own. The first option requires a lot of effort on the part of the teacher, and the second option requires coordination from the students. Neither is easy, and Padlet should always be easy. Now there is a third option: auto-regenerate links. An auto-regenerated link creates a copy of your Padlet in the recipient's account. All Padlets can now enable auto-regenerate links. When someone shares an auto-regenerate link with you, you will be taken to a regenerated copy of the original Padlet in your account. How to create auto-regenerated links This way, you can let other people use your Padlet, but prevent them from modifying the one you own. Custom configurations to support common use cases Auto-regenerate links are designed with specific classroom use cases in mind and provide features to support those use cases. For example, when you create an auto-regenerate link, you can add yourself as a collaborator on all auto-regenerated Padlets. This allows teachers to automatically track their students’ worksheets. Set up auto-regeneration links You can also limit recipients to regenerating only once. With this setting, you can share auto-regenerating links without worrying about unnecessary mass regenerations. Once a recipient uses an auto-regenerating link once, clicking it again will return them to their own regeneration. It also provides flexibility in which posts are included in the automatically generated Padlet. You can choose to include all posts, only admin posts, or no posts at all. These settings make it easy for teachers to reuse Padlets that have already been used in activities.

Create engaging discussion boards with AI. Artificial intelligence is very useful as an auxiliary tool in the hands of students and teachers. AI image generation only allows for self-expression when people describe what they want to see. That's why we created 'I can't draw'. We trust AI to moderate posts, but the final decision is up to the Padlet author. That’s why we created a Safety Net. AI can help create lessons and activities, but not on its own. AI should suggest ideas that can be rejected, modified, or approved by a skilled educator. That's why we created an AI-guided discussion board. Here's how it works. AI helps you find interesting discussion questions You might wonder why we need AI to create a discussion board. Discussion boards seem simple. Add a question and let participants discuss. The quality is determined by the discussion. But what determines the quality of a discussion? Discussions are built on the foundation provided by discussion questions, and this is where AI can help. Consider two discussion questions: How might establishing human settlements on other planets affect global cooperation and challenge our understanding of what it means to be human? What are the pros and cons of sending people into space? The first question stimulates imagination and invites participants to hypothesize about potential futures. The second question invites mechanical analysis and formulaic responses. While we can all tell the difference between good and bad discussion questions, creating good ones is deceptively difficult. This is where AI comes into play. Co-creating discussion boards with AI The first step is to add student and subject information. This data tells the AI what kind of materials and language to use. The next step is to find questions with AI. This is where AI really comes into its own. AI provides endless suggestions in an editable text box, and it’s up to you to decide which ideas are useful. You can keep regenerating until you get a suggestion you like. You can edit a good suggestion to make it a great suggestion, or you can write your own original idea. You have complete control. The role of AI is to provide you with an infinite number of ideas to build on. After you’ve finalized your question, decide if the board is discussion or debate type and choose whether to add your first post. Once again, the AI will offer suggestions. You can accept them, ignore them, or modify them. The final step is to share the discussion board with your students and watch them develop deeper understanding.
