He's here.
The original Draco Malfoy has returnedโ€“ but this time, he's on stage.
๐Ÿ’ซ
While Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has long been one of Broadway's top-selling and most talked-about productions, the show has reached a new level of excitement with Tom Felton stepping into the role of Draco Malfoy live on stage. For many fans, it doesn't feel like a simple casting announcement: it feels like a full-circle moment. Draco, grown up, complicated, and finally unfolding in real time.

I was fortunate enough to witness his performance this past week, and I'm excited to share my thoughts, along with a few practical tips, with HereWeAre community.

Waitโ€ฆ What? Harry Potter as a Play?

Hi! This is Shuu, and I'll be your guide today.

If you've been a little removed from the Harry Potter universe, it might surprise you to learn that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child exists as a full-scale stage production โ€” and a spectacular one at that.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child โ€” A Quick Overview

๐Ÿช„
The story follows Harry Potter's son, Albus Severus Potter, who unexpectedly befriends Scorpius Malfoy, the son of his father's longtime rival, Draco Malfoy. That friendship sparks a journey that challenges legacy, identity, and the weight of expectation.
Yes, Harry and Ginny are married. Hermione and Ron are married. Draco married Astoria Greengrass.

Scorpius Malfoy
Everything seems "settled"โ€ฆ until Albus and Scorpius become best friends.
As Albus struggles with living in the shadow of The Chosen One, Scorpius grapples with cruel rumors and isolation. At its heart, The Cursed Child is a coming-of-age storyโ€“one that asks what it really means to inherit a name, and how friendship can become a lifeline.
The play first premiered on July 30, 2016, and is currently running at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, the Palace Theatre in London, and other global productions.

approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes, including intermission.
Though it's a play, it incorporates music, choreography, and jaw-dropping stage effects that repeatedly make you forget you're watching live theatre.

The OG Malfoy Makes His Return

ยฉmomentsofshuu
Since November 2025, Tom Felton has been portraying Draco Malfoy in the New York cast, and the response has been nothing short of electric. Fans from all over the world have gathered to witness his return, many seeing him perform live for the very first time.
There's something especially moving about seeing Felton's Draco nowโ€“ older, quieter, carrying the emotional weight of a lifetime. Even visually, there's a striking resemblance to Lucius Malfoy, with Draco adopting a longer, almost familiar silhouette that longtime fans will immediately recognize.
Originally, Tom's run was scheduled to end around March, but due to overwhelming fan response, he extended his contract through May 10, 2026, as a gesture of gratitude for the outpouring of love.
During the performance, you can feel the audience holding its breath when he first appearsโ€“ and erupting in cheers when he delivers iconic lines like "Scared, Potter?" Watching him try (and just a tiny bit fail) to hide his smile in those moments was genuinely emotional. It felt less like nostalgia and more like witnessing history.

The Play โ€” and What to Watch For

This was my second time seeing The Cursed Child, so I knew the plot and the major effects โ€” but it didn't stop the magic from landing all over again.

The stagecraft is exceptional. The opening sequence, in particular, makes you feel as though you're boarding the train to Hogwarts for the very first time. It's immersive, cinematic, and endlessly inventive.

Seating Tips

โ€ข
Dress Circle: Highly recommended for first-time viewers. It offers a wide, balanced view of the stage and effects.
โ€ข
Balcony: Still a fantastic experience, especially if you enjoy seeing the full scope of the production.
โ€ข
Orchestra: Best for close-up expressions and emotional nuance.
Personally, I've seen the show from both the balcony and dress circle โ€” and while orchestra seats offer intimacy, there's something especially magical about seeing the effects unfold from a bit farther back.
โš ๏ธ Content & Sensory Notes

The show includes
strobe and flashing lights. If you're sensitive, the balcony may be more comfortable. Some moments can feel intense or disorienting. There are darker, emotional scenes: I wouldn't recommend it for children under 10โ€“11 years old.
Additionally, as a longtime Harry Potter fan, I'll be honest, I had mixed feelings about how Harry himself is portrayed. I tend to view The Cursed Child more as a spin-off rather than a direct continuation of the original series. There are a few setting and character inconsistencies that might stand out to die-hard fans, so I'd recommend watching it with a bit of flexibility and an open mind.

Side Notes for Enjoying the Show Fully

Coat Check: Seats are quite snug. Use the coat check if you canโ€“ especially in winter.
(Cost: $2 as of Feb 2026)

Concessions: You can order directly from your seat. Orders come with a complimentary Chocolate Frog (with collectible card!). I ordered popcornโ€“ total was around $16 with tip.

Merch & Dressing Up: Dress up in your Harry Potter gear โ€” itโ€™s encouraged! While the theatre merch is beautiful and show-specific, I recommend visiting the Harry Potter flagship store in Flatiron beforehand for a wider selection and more classic items.
