### TOP 3 theatres you must visit when traveling to London!

# Sadler's Wells Theatre

## 🎭 Sadler’s Wells Theatre | Info

> Location: Islington, London
> Opened: 1680s (current building rebuilt in 1998, the sixth theatre
> Size: Main auditorium with approx. 1,500 seats / Lilian Baylis Studio

Located in Islington, London, Sadler's Wells Theatre is one of the city's most iconic venues especially known for contemporary dance and experimental performance. In addition to hosting international touring companies, the theatre also produces its own original works which makes it a favorite among performing arts lovers.

One of its biggest strengths is that many performances focus on movement and imagery rather than dialogue. For this reason, even audiences who aren't fluent in English can enjoy the shows without feeling lost. Some productions also offer surtitles, which can really help with understanding the performance 🤔

Rather than traditional plays Sadler's Wells leans toward modern, experimental performances with a strong fringe-style sensibility! So it makes it a great place to experience London's international theatre scene firsthand.

Another fascinating point is how much the theatre continues to expand. It currently operates the Peacock Theatre in the West End, and last year, Sadler's Wells East opened in Stratford Olympic Park. This makes it a theatre to keep an eye on for the future as well 🤗

# The Old Vic

If you want to truly experience the tradition and depth of theatre, the Old Vic is a must visit.

From Shakespeare to modern plays, it showcases the very essence of text-driven, classic theatre and remains an essential part of London's theatre history.

The current building was constructed in 1818 and it first opened as the Royal Coburg Theatre and was later renamed the Royal Victoria Hall in 1833. Much of The Old Vic's reputation today is credited to Emma Cons and her niece, Lilian Baylis.

When Lilian Baylis took over in the spring of 1914 she staged Shakespeare productions featuring top-tier actors of the time, which became a huge success. From then on, The Old Vic established itself as a central hub for Shakespeare, opera, and ballet in London.

Performances here are strongly centered on acting and dialogue which results in an intense and immersive atmosphere on stage ✨ In some cases, post-show discussions are held, allowing audiences to reflect more deeply on the production 💬

With a level of quality that easily stands alongside Broadway, The Old Vic is highly recommended for anyone who truly loves classic theatre.

# Hampstead Theatre

## 🎭 Hampstead | Basic Info

> Location: Hampstead, London
> Current theatre opened: 2003 (purpose-built venue)
> Size: Main auditorium with 373 seats / Hampstead Downstairs with up to 100 seats

![ⓒ West End](https://upload.cafenono.com/image/slashpagePost/20260209/123401_P1Ig5bty0jILJCtBLS?q=80&s=1280x180&t=outside&f=webp)

Hampstead Theatre is known for its strong focus on modern plays with high artistic quality and experimental approaches, rather than large-scale productions.

Many of the UK's most talked-about new works premiere here first, earning it a reputation as a place where "today's stories appear before anywhere else."

One of its defining features is its deep exploration of social issues and human psychology. Instead of flashy visuals, these productions emphasize storytelling and strong scripts, giving off a distinct fringe-festival vibe.

The current Hampstead Theatre opened in 2003 and features a main auditorium with 373 seats. The smaller space, Hampstead Downstairs, was transformed in 2010 into a laboratory for developing new writing which supports emerging playwrights and experimental works.

Because seating is limited, popular productions often sell out quickly. So if you're planning to visit, be sure to be on the look out and check the schedule regularly! Make good use of ticket platforms such as ticketmaster when booking!
