What is a retrospective? How do I do it?
I'll introduce you to several different ways of reflecting.
Freedom
•
Please feel free to write
about the incident
,
my feelings
, and
future direction.
4L
The 4L form is a retrospective method consisting of four categories:
Liked, Learned, Lacked, and Longed for.
It allows you to think from a factual perspective rather than an emotional one.
•
L
iked :
Good points
•
L
earned :
Lessons learned
•
L
acked :
What was lacking
•
L
onged for :
What I wish for
4
F
4F is a short and simple way to reflect. Add feedback here and it becomes 5F.
At first, write only up to number 4, then share it with others and get feedback to complete 5F!
1.
Facts:
Summarize the factual details of what happened.
2.
Feelings:
Organize your feelings and emotions about what happened.
3.
Findings:
Summarize what you learned about what you did.
4.
Future Actions:
Plan how you will act in the future.

KPT
KPT is a reflection form consisting of three items:
Keep, Problem, and Try.
•
Keep
: What was good,
what should be maintained
•
Problem
: Based on what was regrettable,
what was problematic or needed to be improved
from the process to the result
•
Try
: Identify the causes of the problems discussed above and
try something else in the future.
YWT
It is a short and simple method that summarizes what I learned at Toyota in Japan
and used to improve my work skills.
YWT is an acronym for What I've Done, What I've Learned, and What I'll Do Next.
•
One Thing
: Organize the parts that you have clearly learned or understood while working.
•
What I learned
: Write down what you learned and the implications.
•
What to do next
: Write down where and how you will apply what you have learned.
AAR
AAR stands for
After Action Review
, and it is said to have been first used by the U.S. Army.
It is a flexible and convenient method that can be applied even during work.
•
Initial Goals
: What were
the intended outcomes
?
•
Reality
:
What actually
happened?
•
Lessons Learned
:
Why was there a gap
between initial goals and reality ?
•
Purpose
: What will you
continue to improve
and what will you
give up
?
What have you learned?
