There has been a recent surge in poetry sales in the European book market, reflecting the influence of social media and the digital age, with poets like Donna Ashworth at the center of it.
What's interesting is that they are different from the general approach of the existing literary world. Personally, I think that the culture of serializing essays, poems, and cartoons that already appeared on Instagram and other platforms in Korea is belatedly emerging in Europe.
Utilizing social media: Donna Ashworth, one of the most popular poets, has amassed over 1.6 million followers on social media, including Instagram, and her poetry has been met with social comfort and embrace by many.
Poetry and Merchandise Combination: Her website monetizes her poetry collections through a variety of products, including “Wild Hope” tote bags, candles, hoodies, and more. It’s similar to the influencer market, where readers can feel connected and become brands themselves, rather than just selling poetry.
This is a development we've seen a lot. Of course, there are criticisms. People who post great stories and poems on Instagram are called #Instapoetry, but existing writers like Philip Larkin point out that it is full of easy and pretty words, but it is a different approach from 'accurate expression' and has no literary value. (If it sells well, that's enough vs. literary value?)
In the past, poets who debuted in the traditional literary world, such as Lord Byron and John Betjeman, recorded large sales, but in the modern market, poets of the Instagram era are standing out. In fact, as a person who has no literary knowledge, I think that these Instagram poets are receiving sympathy and love from many people with emotional and easily accessible content that made difficult poetry. I think it can also be seen as a new genre interpretation. Personally, I think it might be the difference in directing where one square or story on Instagram becomes one line and then combines them to express one poem.
Personally, I haven't seen many works by poets in Korea that I can really take to heart since Ijeni and Park Jun, but if you know any good poets, writers, or influencers, please recommend them.

저는 이번에 박참새 시인의 '정신머리'라는 시집을 주문했는데요, 아직 배송이 오지 않아 감상하지는 않았지만, 읽고 난 뒤에 마음에 들면 알려드릴게요 ! :)
