A new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States finds that there is no clear evidence on the impact of remote work on productivity. The study found that there was no significant difference in productivity growth since 2020 between industries that were more conducive to remote work and those that were more in-person.
The study examined productivity trends across 43 industries, assigning each industry a “teleworkability score” based on its job composition and the percentage of jobs that can be done remotely. This score was used to assess whether telework significantly improves productivity in industries where telework is readily and widely adopted, such as professional services, compared to industries that require face-to-face work, such as restaurants.
However, John Fernald and his co-authors found that after controlling for pre-pandemic industry trends, there was no significant statistical relationship between the prevalence of remote work and productivity post-pandemic.
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a dramatic increase in remote work. At its peak, more than 60% of workdays were remote, up from 5% before the pandemic. While many U.S. companies are pushing their employees to return to the office, the hybrid model is still in place, with about 30% of paid workdays being remote as of December 2023.
Increases in productivity can also be seen in studies conducted domestically. https://www.hani.co.kr/arti/society/labor/1043292.html
In fact, this paper has sparked a variety of discussions on Reddit/Hackernews. Some debaters have argued that remote work increases individual productivity, while others have pointed out that remote work can have a negative impact on teamwork and collaboration. Additionally, while remote work appears to have a positive effect on employee well-being and satisfaction, there is no clear evidence that this directly contributes to company profits. Some have argued that remote work can improve employees’ quality of life by providing flexibility in working hours and locations, while others have pointed out that remote work can open up the global labor market and promote global competition. These different perspectives reflect the complex impacts of remote work on productivity, collaboration, employee well-being, and the global labor market.
