If we lived in a flood of mobile apps a few years ago, we are now living in an era of a flood of AI apps. In the midst of so many apps that it is confusing, which apps have the most users? Tech VC Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Sensor Tower have ranked AI apps released by the first quarter of 2024 based on the number of monthly active users (MAU).
Looking at this ranking alone, OpenAI seems to have made the most money, so I think the center of gravity is more focused in one direction.
What's notable is that most services use OpenAI's API. Everyone says that AI has limitations in making money through B2C, but in a way, it seems that OpenAI is making money through B2B2C by servicing GPT-n. In the case of Microsoft, it is divided into Edge, Bing, and Copilot, but they are all in the top 50, and image/video generation AI services are also prominent. In Korea, Liner and Qanda are the only ones to make it into the top 50.
Personally, I found it so visually clear that the gap between 1st and 2nd place and the rankings below was so big, whether it was mobile or web. I'm curious to see how the rankings will change in the next quarter as Claude3 shows more utility than expected. (Of course, if GPT-5 comes out, there won't be much of a change. There's no place that can break down chatGPT's stronghold...)
It is also interesting to note that among the services that entered the top 50, a16z selected Liner, Candy, Suno, and Idiogram as noteworthy services. They have actually succeeded in securing meaningful active users, and I believe that they will be able to gain more users through this leaderboard entry. I personally find Suno very interesting, so I recommend that you try it out. It creates music and even adds lyrics to it. It is better than I thought, so it is touching and fun.
