Hopes are rising that Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (C) will become a leading aircraft manufacturer after Airbus (A) and Boeing (B).

Not only is aircraft manufacturing itself challenging, but the patents and various technologies are practically monopolized by Airbus and Boeing, making it tough for new companies to break into the market.

The C919 is the model that China's state-run COMAC started developing in 2006 and finally completed after 16 years.

While there have been several test flights before, this is actually the first time carrying real passengers for a commercial flight.

Carrying about 130 passengers, it took off from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and landed at Beijing Capital Airport in just over two hours.

Although it was said to be self-developed , some say it is embarrassing to call it self-developed since the aircraft engine and internal digital panel were developed using technology from GE and Western countries.
