Interviewing for a new role in a startup requires a special approach. Consider the following steps to design an effective interview method. The saddest thing is that people are hired for roles that are unnecessary to each other, and they are left feeling awkward because they have nothing to do, or when they are hired, they often end up fighting because they are not the right candidates.
Understand your role: You need to have a clear understanding of your new role. Clarify the responsibilities and day-to-day impact of the role and rank them by importance.
Professional Interview Setup: Translate the core challenges of the role into interview questions. For example, for a web engineer, include live coding where you develop features in a real code base.
Real-world task-based interviews: Assess the candidate's thinking and problem-solving skills by having them solve real problems for the company. Consider respect for their time and reward for their efforts during this process.
Adjust your expectations: Be realistic about how much you can actually accomplish and consider the time and effort required for the interview.
Collect and apply feedback: Collect candidate feedback on the interview process and adjust the interview format if necessary.
This approach gives candidates a taste of the real work they will face at your company, and gives companies a chance to see firsthand how you perform. This process helps build an interview culture that values mutual fit and respect.
When I was working at Nexon, I received interviewer training, and one thing I remember from that time was that if you make a mistake in hiring, you will lose three times that person's annual salary. Let's all do our best.
