Have you heard of the term positive secret? It is a concept that I first encountered while reading a paper recently. A positive secret is positive information or news that an individual does not share with others and only knows about himself.
A study from Columbia University in New York, USA, found that people with positive secrets experienced higher levels of positive emotions, which was more pronounced than those with negative or unspecified secrets. The paper also experimentally showed that people with positive secrets were more influenced by intrinsic motivation.
The study's first authors, Slepian and Galinsky, found that having a positive secret was associated with autonomy and internal choice, which is linked to a person's internal motivation rather than external pressure-based choices. These findings not only broaden our understanding of how people feel about having a positive secret, but also suggest that positive secrets can contribute to a person's life and vitality.
Sometimes, when you have so much good news and something exciting to share, why not take a moment to quietly savor it for later? It can make things even more enjoyable.
