Recently, Elon Musk has sued OpenAI, claiming that it is not fulfilling its role in achieving AGI through Open, which was the most important value at the time of its establishment. In response, the official statement from the OpenAI board of directors and Sam Altman was posted on the official blog.
Elon Musk played a key role in the early funding of OpenAI, initially offering a $1 billion commitment to OpenAI. However, later on, as it was realized that the amount of money needed to build AGI would be much larger than anticipated, a series of disagreements arose between Musk and OpenAI. Musk wanted to merge OpenAI with Tesla or have full control, but OpenAI felt that these proposals did not fit their mission. Eventually, Musk announced that he would leave OpenAI and create his own AGI competitor. (Late 2015 - Early 2016)
So far, these are facts, and the contents of the email and claims made public by OpenAI are as follows:
OpenAI's position
OpenAI's mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
This means building a safe and beneficial AGI and creating widely distributed benefits.
Initially, they were looking to raise $100 million, but Elon Musk proposed raising $1 billion, significantly more than that amount.
Elon Musk and the friction point
Elon pledged support for OpenAI, but in reality he only gave it about $45 million, while it received more than $90 million from other investors.
Elon left OpenAI for his own reasons, and later founded his own AGI competitor, stating that OpenAI could not succeed in its mission without him.
The future would require billions of dollars in funding, and Elon Musk didn't think that was achievable. And he left OpenAI.
OpenAI's take on the controversy
The mission of AGI is not to update publicly funded tools, but to build useful tools that are widely available. In fact, OpenAI is making significant progress in:
Albania is using OpenAI's tools to accelerate its EU accession.
Digital Green, powered by OpenAI, is reducing the cost of agricultural extension services by 100x and increasing farmer incomes in Kenya and India.
Insurer Lifespan is using GPT-4 to streamline its surgical consent forms.
Iceland is using GPT-4 to preserve the Icelandic language.
They said that even after Elon Musk's support ended, OpenAI continued to work toward its mission, and that they had made progress despite Musk's negative views, saying that they had a low chance of success, and that Musk was belatedly coveting the value of this.
From Elon Musk's perspective, the negative comments made during the investment fund raising and project progress stages were revealed in the emails, making him look like a coward's club rather than a man's club, and he has withdrawn from the game. Given Elon Musk's personality, he will likely refute such statements, so let's see what he has to say. These days, Elon Musk seems to be working hard on Diablo 4...
