Signifiers

Definition
Signifiers are design elements that tell the user what an element will do. These visual or structural features tell the user what the element is for or how to interact with it.
Explanation
Signifiers help users understand and interact with interfaces. They help users predict and understand the function of elements when they click buttons or interact with them.
Importance
For example, clickable buttons are usually given a three-dimensional feel or a shadow to indicate that they are clickable. This visually indicates to the user that the button is an element that can be pressed. Another example is hyperlinks, which are usually underlined in blue under the text to indicate that they are clickable.
Developing your designs using Signifiers helps you get your users to do what they want faster and improves the user experience.
