DeepMind, in partnership with Google Cloud, has released a new tool called SynthID in beta that allows AI-generated images to be digitally watermarked to identify them.
Enter SynthID: SynthID is a tool for identifying AI-generated images, specifically those generated by DeepMind’s latest text-to-image model, Imagen.
Digital watermarking: This technology embeds a digital watermark directly into the pixels of an image, making it invisible to the human eye but identifiable.
Risks and Responses: AI-generated images offer great creativity, but they also run the risk of spreading misinformation. SynthID helps reduce these risks and helps users know when they interact with generated media that it is AI-generated.
Things to note
Importance of Digital Watermarking: Existing watermarking methods are not sufficient to identify AI-generated images. SynthID emerged to solve this problem.
AI Ethics and Responsibility: SynthID provides a way to responsibly handle AI-generated content, mirroring DeepMind and Google Cloud’s approach to responsible AI development.
Future potential: SynthID has the potential to be applied to other AI models and formats, such as audio, video, and text.
