Advances in AI technology and availability of open source/APIs are driving a major movement in AI engineering.
In 2013, various AI tasks that required five years of research team effort could be solved in a matter of hours using APIs in 2023.
The current expression Prompt Engineering can be misleading. Strictly speaking, the expression AI Engineering is more correct (from the perspective of connection and use).
AI engineers and AI researchers can move left to tune/host models or move right to build more features based on the API (as per the diagram above).
The term "prompt engineer" itself is ambiguous โ How is it distinguished from a user? Usage?
Prompt Engineering, which is currently used in Korea, is literally spending time thinking about prompts or finding more useful prompts rather than engineering.
In Japan, they even use the term โprompt designerโ.
In the West, people who use AI to create something (whether it's a drawing or a text) are generally referred to as AI Creators.
Those who only type Prompt seem to be referred to as users or are looking for a suitable term to call them.
Whatever it is, AI engineers are responsible for reflecting AI advancements in real-world product development and creating real-world products used by millions of people in an instant.
AI engineers can be found in startups as well as big companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta.
AI engineers can validate AI products 1,000 to 10,000 times cheaper and use different backgrounds and tools than traditional ML engineers.
While traditional ML focuses on fraud risk, recommendation systems, anomaly detection, and feature stores, AI engineers are developing writing apps, personalized learning tools, natural language spreadsheets, and more.
Personally, I used to call it an AI service developer, but now I think it should be called an AI Engineer. Kakao Brain's Pathfinder program is a program to cultivate a typical AI Engineer.
