Outline

This paper presents a novel approach to formalizing "style," the way authors construct personal narratives to give meaning to their experiences. It analyzes style through patterns of linguistic choice, leveraging a framework that integrates functional linguistics, computer science, and psychology. Using a language model, we automatically extract linguistic features and, specifically, analyze dream narratives to demonstrate the relationship between linguistic choice and psychological state. Using a case study of a war veteran, we reveal that verb types (verbal process versus mental process) are related to psychological state.

Takeaways, Limitations

Takeaways:
A new framework for systematically analyzing the style of personal narratives is presented.
Revealing the link between linguistic choices and psychological states.
Introducing the possibility of large-scale text analysis through automated language analysis methods.
A case study of a war veteran demonstrates the relationship between PTSD and language style.
Limitations:
Further research is needed to determine the generalizability of the proposed framework.
The type of text being analyzed (dream narrative) is limited.
Consideration needs to be given to the accuracy and bias of language models.
Further research is needed to clarify the causal relationship between psychological states and language styles.
