This is a deep reflection on the challenges and changes teachers face in the educational environment of the AI era. Based on my experience as an educator, this article delves into how AI technology is influencing students’ writing skills and teachers’ evaluation criteria. Along with this analysis, it is important to consider other educators’ perspectives on the balance between writing tasks and oral defense.
The Impact of AI: As mentioned in the previously shared article, AI writing tools have fundamentally changed the way students write, forcing students to rely on prompt engineering rather than logical thinking and research-based writing.
Changes in the learning process: Traditional assessment criteria such as quality of writing, effort, and depth of research are losing their meaning due to the introduction of AI technology. This suggests that educators need to rethink the way they assess students’ learning process and outcomes.
Importance of oral defense: According to educational experts, oral defense is a useful way to check whether students actually understand their writing. It encourages students to actually think about and learn about the topic, rather than simply using AI to write.
Changes in assessment methods: In the age of AI, educators need to assess students’ thinking processes and learning abilities more comprehensively, not just their writing skills. This can be done through a variety of assessment methods, such as oral exams.
Other educators' perspectives: Other educators' perspectives on the balance between written and oral defense may vary. Some educators may emphasize the importance of written defense, while others may place greater emphasis on the effectiveness of oral defense. It is important to develop a balanced assessment system that takes these different perspectives into account.
Indeed, it seems that educators are coming to a critical moment in the AI era. Understanding how advances in AI technology will impact how students learn and how teachers evaluate is crucial for the future of education. Therefore, more research and discussion is needed on various methods and approaches to balance written and oral defense.
Personally, I think public education is a socialization institution, and I think knowledge is already being privately educated and mechanized. We don't learn the importance of Korean, English, and math at school, but how to get along well in a community, how to communicate, and how to follow rules. The reason why private education is developed is the same, and ultimately, it is in the same context that test takers and Korean middle and high school students seek learning methods and teaching materials outside of public education in order to get good grades in the college entrance exam system.
If AI is applied more quickly in education, the so-called 'personalized' education is not a dream. I think it will be a form where students set what they want to study, AI does the education and evaluation, and teachers guide students to become members of society. Of course, this is just my own opinion.
The Ministry of Education seems to be painting this picture. Classum and other domestic startups seem to have caught on well...
