Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence

This contains a deep reflection on the challenges and changes faced by teachers in the educational environment of the AI era. Drawing on experiences as an educator, this article explores in depth how AI technology is affecting students’ writing methods and teachers’ evaluation standards. Along with this analysis, it is important to consider the perspectives of other educators on balancing writing assignments and oral defenses.
Impact of AI: As mentioned in the previously shared article, AI writing tools have fundamentally changed the way students compose their work. This shift has led students to rely more on prompt engineering than on logical thinking and research-based writing.
Changes in the learning process: The introduction of AI technology is making traditional evaluation criteria, such as writing quality, effort, and research depth, less meaningful. This implies that educators need to reconsider how they assess both students’ learning processes and their outcomes.
The importance of oral defense: According to educational experts, oral defense is a useful method to verify whether students have a real understanding of their writing. This encourages students not just to use AI to write, but to actually think about and learn the subject.
Changes in assessment methods: In the AI era, educators need to evaluate not just students’ writing abilities but also their thought processes and capacity for learning in a more comprehensive way. This can be achieved through a variety of assessment tools, such as oral exams.
Other educators' perspectives: Perspectives among educators on balancing writing and oral defenses can vary. Some may emphasize the importance of writing, while others give more weight to the effectiveness of oral defense. Considering these different viewpoints is key to developing a balanced assessment system.
It really seems like we are approaching a pivotal moment for educators in the AI era. Understanding how advancements in AI affect students’ learning methods and teachers’ evaluation standards is crucial for the future of education. Therefore, further research and discussion on different ways and approaches to strike a balance between writing and oral defense are needed.
Personally, I see public education as a socializing institution, and believe that knowledge itself is already being privatized and mechanized. At school, we don't really master subjects like Korean, English, or Math, but rather learn how to get along in a community, communicate, and follow rules. That's one reason why private education is so developed, and in the same context, test takers and Korean middle and high school students turn to learning methods and resources outside the public school system to achieve better results in entrance exams.
If AI is applied even more rapidly in education, what we call 'personalized' education may no longer be just a dream. Students could choose what they want to study, AI would handle both teaching and assessment, and teachers would guide students to become members of society. Of course, that's just my personal thought.
