Neuralink's surgical procedure to implant a chip into its head has been successful.
Haebom
Neuralink, a medical technology company led by Elon Musk, has implanted a brain chip into a human subject for the first time. The technology aims to allow people to control their nerves through a computer with their own minds. It may be a bit creepy to say this, but the purpose of this project is to transplant it to people with disabilities such as visual impairment, hearing impairment, and speech impairment, so that they can live a normal life.
And, Neuralink CEO Musk announced the news on Twitter/X, revealing that the patient who underwent surgery is recovering. (If the surgery is successful, the patient will be able to send signals to computers and electronic devices just by thinking.) The surgery was successful, but the key now is for the patient to recover and be able to operate electronic devices as intended without any aftereffects. .
Neuralink's first human trials were conducted in patients with quadriplegia due to spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Musk announced Neuralink's first product, 'Telepathy', which aims to enable disabled people to control electronic devices with their brains. The technology aims to give people with disabilities the ability to operate a computer cursor or keyboard using just their thoughts.
Of course, there is still a lot of controversy. In Korea, this cyberpunk-like challenge, which was called Verichip, has been viewed unfavorably by the religious community and various civic groups. (They said it was made by Bill Gates, but Elon Musk made it) There are also articles like this, even though it is not necessarily a specific group. According to Wired, the monkeys Neuralink used in its experiments were kept in painful conditions and are being investigated by the U.S. government for violating animal welfare laws. This leaves us with reasonable concerns about Neuralink implanting its chips into the human brain.
Depending on the results of this first surgery, the future development of Neuralink's first product, 'Telepathy', may gain momentum or face a crisis. Musk said what it would be like if Stephen Hawking could type, act, and speak quickly, and that our goal is to enable people with disabilities to live more normal lives.
