Outline

This paper presents a smoking cessation counseling chatbot that utilizes the Motivational Interviewing (MI) technique based on a state-of-the-art large-scale language model (LLM). The chatbot, developed in collaboration with clinicians, was tested on 106 participants to measure their confidence in successfully quitting smoking. The results showed that after conversations with the chatbot, the participants’ confidence increased by an average of 1.7 points (on a 0-10 scale), and the chatbot’s MI compliance rate was 98%, which was higher than that of human counselors. The participants’ language analysis showed that they had a high level of motivation for change. However, they scored lower than human counselors in the empathy measurement. As a result, this study suggests the possibility of counseling automation using modern LLMs.
