While reading Bill Campbell 's book, I clearly realized that coaches exist in other fields than sports. Before that, I actually thought of it as a job title, and I didn't really know the difference between it and mentoring or consulting. Recently, I quit my job and met various people, and I gave coaching to a friend who wasn't coaching. That friend actually saw the effect of coaching, and after that, I introduced more and more people, and now the number of people I coached exceeded 12.
Before starting every coaching session, I explain to you via email or over a meal what coaching is and what we will do, but I thought it would be a good idea to document it this time, so I am writing it down.

Coaching is an activity that helps a person achieve their goals and improve their performance by drawing out their full potential. Rather than providing expertise or answers, coaches guide the coachee to find and implement solutions on their own through questions and conversations.
In other words, the core of coaching is to discover and strengthen the capabilities and resources that already exist within the coachee . To do this, the coach uses methods such as listening, questioning, and feedback. Rather than one-sided advice or instructions, coaching focuses on the subject’s subjective reflection and behavioral change.
Therefore, coaching is not simply a task performance, but a fundamental process of increasing the self-awareness, responsibility, and autonomy of the coachee. From this perspective, coaching is established as an effective development methodology for personal growth and organizational performance improvement.
The basics of coaching?
1.
Performance = Potential - Obstacles : In coaching, it is important to find and remove obstacles that block the development of an individual's potential to improve performance.
2.
Increased self-confidence and self-esteem: The ultimate goal of coaching is to increase the self-confidence and self-esteem of the coachee, thereby freeing them from dependence on others and allowing them to act according to their own principles.
3.
Establishing Basic Assumptions For behavior change to be sustainable, you need insight into the values and mindsets that underlie your behavior. Coaching helps you establish basic assumptions that will help you achieve your goals.
4.
Self-awareness through questions: In coaching, instead of the coach giving the answers, the coach asks questions to help the coachee recognize the situation and find solutions. This process deepens self-awareness.
GROW model
A representative coaching methodology is the GROW model.
Coaching is conducted in four stages: Goal - Reality - Options - Will .
Step 1 is to clarify the coaching goal. It is important to set goals at an appropriate level in terms of quantity and quality.
Step 2 is the process of accurately recognizing your current situation and capabilities. Check your self-awareness and self-concept.
Step 3 is about exploring practical ways to achieve your goals.
Step 4 is the step of checking and strengthening the will to practice.
In this way, the GROW model can be said to be a representative process that well reflects the purpose and principles of coaching.
In modern society, the value of coaching is growing. In order to foster talents with both expertise and autonomy, and to adapt to dynamically changing environments, individual growth and initiative are key driving forces.
At first, I started small to talk to people from various fields and not get stagnant, but it is more fun than I thought. I think the reason why coaching is more fun than I thought is because I can see the other person's growth up close. We usually meet every 1-2 months, and seeing the actual changes is a good stimulus for me.
As artificial intelligence gains attention, the value of “asking good questions” is increasing, which is also why coaching is becoming more meaningful to me.
