You order coffee with 이거 줘 because you heard it in a drama. The barista understands, but the sentence is casual: "Give me this." With an unfamiliar adult, 이거 주세요 is the safer travel phrase.
For a Korea trip, use 존댓말 as your default with staff, drivers, hosts, and people you have just met. The everyday -요 style gives you a practical polite base. 반말 is casual speech used when the relationship and situation support it; age alone is not permission to switch.
You will also hear the more formal -습니다/ㅂ니다 style in announcements and service language. You do not need to copy every level you hear. Start by recognizing the difference and keeping your own speech consistently polite.
존댓말 and 반말 are relationship choices

The casual form is not inherently rude. It can be natural between close friends, partners, family members, and others who share that speech level. The problem is using it before the relationship makes it appropriate.
Your safest travel default is the -요 style
Use polite forms with people you do not know, regardless of whether they seem younger or older than you. These cover most short traveler interactions:

Not every polite expression ends in -요. 감사합니다 and 죄송합니다 use the formal polite style, while 주세요 contains the honorific marker -시-. Treat these as complete useful phrases first.
At a café or restaurant
The most useful contrast is not a grammar quiz. It changes how a request sounds to the person serving you.

Staff may ask 드시고 가세요?, "Are you having it here?" The verb 드시다 is an honorific form of 먹다. You can answer 먹고 갈게요, "I'll eat here," or 포장이요, "To go." You do not need to mirror the honorific verb when describing your own action.
In a taxi or at a hotel
Keep the polite ending even when the exchange is only one sentence.

Shortening 가 주세요 to 가 or 내릴게요 to 내릴게 removes the polite ending. Drama dialogue may make those forms familiar, but the travel relationship is different.
Why staff may sound more formal than you
You may hear -습니다/ㅂ니다, -겠습니다, and -세요 in announcements or service interactions.

The formal style fits public information and some professional service roles. It is not a signal that your polite -요 reply is automatically inadequate. You can answer 네, 알겠어요, "Okay, I understand," or 감사합니다, "Thank you."
A short question is not always 반말
A cashier may say 봉투요? ("A bag?"), 적립하세요? ("Are you collecting points?"), or simply 카드요? ("Card?"). Korean frequently omits information that is clear from the scene. A fragment without a full verb ending cannot always be classified by looking for 요 or the lack of it.
Tone, wording, role, and the missing context all matter. Do not assume someone was rude because the sentence was short. Focus first on the choice word: bag, points, receipt, dine-in, or takeout.
Hearing 반말 does not give you an automatic rule
You may hear casual endings from friends speaking to each other, adults speaking with children, family members, video hosts addressing an audience in a chosen style, or characters in a drama. You may also hear commands on informal content or speech with omitted endings.
None of those examples means "use 반말 with anyone younger." Relationship, mutual expectations, setting, and speaker roles interact. As a traveler, continue with 존댓말 unless a real relationship develops and the switch becomes clear.
How people can agree to switch
Two people who have become comfortable may discuss the speech level directly.

말을 놓다 literally uses "put down speech" and refers to dropping polite speech. The exact transition differs by relationship; the important point for a learner is not to presume it.
If you mix the levels by mistake
One missed 요 does not require a long explanation. Correct the phrase and continue.

Avoid stacking politeness onto every word. A clear noun plus one correct polite ending is often enough: 아메리카노 하나 주세요, "One Americano, please."

Practice these until the endings feel automatic:

After your trip, listen again to a remembered conversation. Was the staff member using -요, -세요, or -습니다? Was the casual line from a friend, a child, or media dialogue? That question turns a fear of "sounding rude" into a more useful Korean lesson about endings, honorifics, and relationships.
