Instagram Rankings: How Does It Work?

When you post on Instagram, you may have wondered, “Why do some posts get more views and others get less views?” In fact, Instagram shows posts from accounts I follow (Connected Reach) and accounts I don’t follow yet (Unconnected Reach) in different ways. In this article, I’ll explain how it works and introduce three areas (Reels, Recommendations, Stories) to help you reach more people.

Basic Structure of Reels Rankings

Follower Reach vs. Referral Reach

There are two main types of ranking systems on Instagram.
Follower Reach: When your content is exposed to people who already follow your account.
Referral Reach: When your content is exposed to people who don’t already follow your account.
The three most important signals (indicators) in both systems are:
-Viewing time (average viewing time)
-Likes (Likes per reach)
-Shares (shares per reach)

The 3 most important signals

When deciding whether to give a particular Reel more exposure, Instagram looks at three main metrics :
1.
Viewing time (average viewing time)
Example) If my reel is 30 seconds long, check the percentage (%) of how many seconds were watched.
Tip: It is important to reduce bounce rate by placing scenes or text that grab attention within the first 3 seconds of the video.
2.
Great
What is the percentage of likes compared to the number of people exposed (Reach)?
Tip: Naturally encourage 'Likes and Follows' at the end of your Reels video, but don't overdo it as it can be counterproductive.
3.
Share
The percentage of times you share it directly with a friend or acquaintance via DM or on another platform
Tip: Videos that contain ‘useful information’ or ‘relatable stories’ are more likely to be shared.
Subtle differences in ranking priorities
For follower reach: Likes are slightly more important than shares
For referral reach: sharing (messaging) is slightly more important than liking
Viewing time is the most important metric in both cases.
That means, if you’re wondering, “Why do some reels do better and others do worse?”, compare average watch time, likes, and shares (forwards) in the Insights tab. How well these metrics perform can make a big difference in your reels’ exposure.

“If I post too often, won’t my followers get tired?” If you’re worried...

If you're worried that your followers will get tired and unfollow you if you post Reels too often, you may want to consider the Trials feature.

What is the trial feature?

A feature that allows you to skip the linked reach (follower exposure) process and upload Reels directly to the recommended reach.
It is still being tested on some accounts, and the names of certain features may change (keep an eye on Instagram for updates).
Why is it useful?
You can test your videos on new viewers first, reducing the risk of followers getting tired of content overload.
Only content that gets a good response can be shared with followers again, or displayed as an upgrade on your profile.
For example, even if you want to create more than 5 Reels a week, some of them have the advantage of being able to target only 'new viewers' with the trial feature so that your followers don't think, "This account is posting too often and it's overwhelming."
