Applying without Advancing

I have a lot of experience applying to things.
Not casually applying, but the full version, reading calls closely, mapping my work to their language, writing essays, clearing multiple rounds, doing interviews, and getting far enough to believe momentum is real.
And yet, somehow, I often find myself not moving forward.
Over time, I've realised the challenge isn't capability or effort.
It's fit or more precisely, classification.
Many organisations don't quite know where to slot someone whose work sits between research, policy, education, and systems thinking.
That uncertainty tends to stall progress, even when interest is genuine.
I've shared my reflections on a few recent applications.
I'm sharing them because each process taught me something concrete about how these opportunities work, what they reward, and where friction quietly appears.
If you're applying to fellowships, taskforces, or research programs, I hope this helps you read the terrain more clearly.
