In gmail widget, there are no mandatory settings.
List filters
If you select Contain starred messages, you can collect only the starred mails in your Gmail account. If you select Contain important messages, you can collect only the important mails in your Gmail account.
If you select both filters, you can collect both starred mails and important mails in your Gmail account.
