> An era where people desired to understand how the world words - shift towards science, off religion and mysticism

Aka. the age of reason, intellectual + cultural movement in 18th century

- 

> Rationalism - idea that humans are capable of using their cafulty of reason to gain knowledge, sharp turn from the idea that people needed to rely on church and scripture

> Cosmopolitanism - reflected enlightenment thinkers’ view of themselves as actively engaged citizens of the world, as opposed to passive close minded individuals

> Empiricism - Idea that knowledge comes from experience and observation

> Progressivism - belief that through reason and observation, humans can make unlimited linear progess over time.
