Lesson 5: Understanding pressure
What is pressure?
Pressure - The amount of force exerted on the surface of an object per unit area
Pressure is created when particles collide with the walls of the container
There are many units for pressure:
•
Pascal(Newton per square meter)
•
kPa (KiloPascal)
•
PSI (Pound-force per square inch)
Newton is a unit of measurement for force
PhET simulation observations

•
The lower the temperature is, the slower the particles move, which in turn lowers the pressure within the container, vice versa for higher temps.
•
Theres only a certain amount of pressure a container can take before it breaks
•
Pressure is directly proportional to temperature
•
the bigger the particle, the slower it moves
•
With a set amount of particles, the higher the volume the lower the pressure
